I literally watched the "Remember My Name" documentary the other night, and spent last night looking up videos of him on youtube.

Tomorrow during the work day I will be spinning my prized vinyl copy of If I Could Only Remember My Name. Found it in a used record store a few years ago. They had two copies: a pretty pristine copy, and one that was obviously previously owned by a radio station. Because 1) I'm cheap and 2) I had a radio career and I just couldn't resist, I bought the radio station copy. Sadly, the vinyl itself looked like it had never been touched. Happily, that meant that I have a virtually noise-free copy. Love it.

So glad I got to see him live twice, once at BBC Maida Vale studios in 2013 when he recorded his Mastertapes appearence (check it out) and some years later at Shepherd's Bush with his Lighthouse band. Both times, he sang like a bird and engaged with the audience... well, like Croz. With a voice like that, you could forgive him pretty much anything.

Such sad news. I am grateful to have seen CSNY in concert.
Here's a statement from Brian Wilson: "I don’t know what to say other than I’m heartbroken to hear about David Crosby. David was an unbelievable talent -- such a great singer and songwriter. And a wonderful person who was always so complimentary. And I always felt the same about him. David was one of the giants of our time -- I just am at a loss for words. Love & Mercy to David’s family and friends. Love, Brian"

Heartfelt tribute from Graham Nash:
“It is with a deep and profound sadness that I learned that my friend David Crosby has passed. I know people tend to focus on how volatile our relationship has been at times, but what has always mattered to David and me more than anything was the pure joy of the music we created together, the sound we discovered with one another, and the deep friendship we shared over all these many long years. David was fearless in life and in music. He leaves behind a tremendous void as far as sheer personality and talent in this world. He spoke his mind, his heart, and his passion through his beautiful music and leaves an incredible legacy. These are the things that matter most. My heart is truly with his wife, Jan, his son, Django, and all of the people he has touched in this world."

Wanted to start this topic off. Reportedly, Crosby was the person responsible for introducing VDP to BW sometime during the summer or autumn of 1965. Also, David said many complimentary things about Brian over the years....I'm not aware of whatever he might have said (if anything) about the BBs in general, or other members. He was indisputably a fantastic vocalist and songwriter who managed to overcome major substance abuse issues during the course of his life. The Byrds and CSN & Y were two of my all-time favorite bands, and I'm sure they are extremely well-regarded by all the other EH forum members. There would have been no "L.A. Rock Scene" as we know it without the contributions of both Brian Wilson and David Crosby. They were (and are) both absolutely crucial figures in the history and development of late 20th century American pop music.

From one of my favorites, If I Could Only Remember My Name…
"Laughing"
I thought I met a man who said he knew a man Who knew what was going on
I was mistaken, only another stranger that I knew
And I thought that I'd found the light To guide me through my night and all its darkness
I was mistaken, only reflections of a shadow that I saw
And I thought I'd seen someone who seemed at last To know the truth
I was mistaken, only a child laughing in the sun
Ahhh, in the sun.
RIP…

When David came on the scene in 1965, things changed. My world was changing. He was a part of it. 1965 was like an awakening in my life.

He shared with Dennis a love of the sea, and sailing. Also had his own boat, the Mayan.

From one of my favorites, If I Could Only Remember My Name…
"Laughing"This was to have been my first choice when the sad news was confirmed, David and a host of musical colleagues performing one of the most beautiful songs from one of the most beautiful albums. So many songs on IICORMN "float right off the planet", to quote Bruce in another context. "Traction In The Rain" is one. Rest in peace, sir, and thank you: medium.com/schoonermayan/mayans-history-the-david-crosby-years-517d8c0cb389

RIP, Croz.
Can't say I always agreed with him or liked the way he conducted himself, but man he was a great singer and performer. Check out this stellar acoustic performance he did of "Almost Cut My Hair". Wait for the big note!

I enjoy the boatload of new jazzy CDs David has done over the last 5 or 6 years with his collaborators. He and Neil Young kept doing a lot of new material recently, whereas Steve Stills and Graham Nash have done very little. I saw David Crosby at the Neptune Theater in Seattle in 2019, a great show.

Saw CSNY in that lineup, David with his son James Raymond in 2008 and he told the story of how they became reconnected after James was adopted, and clearly inherited his music genes. Great show and wonderful backstory.
Decided a couple of hours before the show to see them, since it was a close venue, and even then David had health issues and we aren’t guaranteed how long we will be here and to see those greats in this moment. RIP

David Crosby labelled Heaven “overrated” in his final messages to fans on Twitter. He said ‘Eleanor Rigby’ was the Beatles' best song and he praised the work of Greta Thunberg. He said, “People with tattoos will not go to heaven. People who drink alcohol will not go to heaven. People who also eat too much pork will not go to heaven.” Back in the 90's I took my then 15 year old daughter to a CSNY concert. Maybe it was one of Neil's Bridge Benefit concerts. David Crosby was there and they let him play a couple of songs solo that he'd written. He introduced “Guinnevere” saying, "I wrote this song when I was a human waste dump". My daughter laughed out loud and the crowd around us chuckled with her. He may have been a lunatic at times, and he survived the alcohol, drugs and guns, but just look at the songs that he wrote or was directly involved with. He loved harmony as much as Brian did (and even commented about Brian in the 1995 Brian documentary). Right up there with some of the best writers: www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/david-crosby-best-songs-1234663169/

I didn't expect his death to hit me as hard as it has. I was blessed to have been able to see CSN twice, once at Starlake Ampitheater in Pittsburgh in 2001, and at the Canfield Fair in Ohio in 2003. David Crosby was the highlight of both shows. At one point during the Starlake show, a little kid ran out onstage, somehow carrying a guitar that was bigger than him. When the kid came out Crosby was facing the other way. When he turned around he jumped back(almost falling), grabbed the guitar from the kid, and they cracked up laughing, and the kid ran offstage. It was a very cool moment. I wonder now if the kid was perhaps Django.
