One of the essential texts of BB literature since its first edition back in 2001 has been Stephen McParland's The Wilson Project, compiled from the tapes and diaries Gary Usher kept while working with Brian 1986-87 under the "guidance" of Landy. Aside from being a day to day chronicle of the (literally) criminal madness of Landy's hold over Brian, Usher's documentation helped mightily in freeing him from the evil doctor. It's a compelling, sometimes hilarious (it's Brian, after all) and frequently horrifying read. When Stephen put almost all of his books up for online purchase (as a .pdf), this volume (along with Our Favourite Recording Sessions 1962-1970 - also essential) were hived off to Editions Berlot but now it's once more available online in an updated and expanded edition for the ludicrous price of $6.95. The link is: The Wilson Project - The Illuminated EditionGo, buy it now. Thank me later.

This is indeed a fine book. The Marie Osmond story stands out in my mind.

I have 'The Wilson Project' (2013 edition) and would like to ask what is the difference between my copy and The Illuminated Edition. Could anyone help me? I also own the other Stephen J. McParland book that AGD mentions 'Our Favourite Recording Sessions' circa 1961-1970, which is a great read too and a book I highly recommend.

This was posted by ChrisFarrell at SSMB: Got this notification from Stephen J McParland and thought is would be of interest to members here. It is an update of the Wilson Project he wrote many years ago about the time with Brian and Gary Usher.
THE WILSON PROJECT - THE ILLUMINATED EDITION 190 PAGES + 300 IMAGES LOCKED PDF DOCUMENT
"Twenty-seven years have passed since I first published this book. It was out of print for some time before French based publisher Les Edition Berlot re-published THE WILSON PROJECT TAPES 1-10 as THE WILSON PROJECT - 2013 EDITION in March 2013. This book is still currently available direct from Amazon. Over the past few years I have received quite a number of enquiries regarding an E-book edition of THE WILSON PROJECT. As an E-Book option was not part of my publishing contract with Les Editions Berlot, I have decided to produce an E-Book edition of THE WILSON PROJECT myself. This E-Book edition contains all the material featured within the Les Editions Berlot "book", plus whatever other information and materials I have been able to unearth concerning "THE WILSON PROJECT" period, some of which was not included in any previous "book" editions. This new E-book edition is more or less in two parts; the first section containing the "story" component of the book and the second section, titled "COLLECTION OF MATERIAL", containing all the memorabilia divided into fourteen separate categories. There are: Original Usher Polaroids; Relevant Record & CD Releases; Unofficial Releases; Odds 'N' Ends; Official Documents; Cassettes Received; Lyrics; Some Usher Notes; Some Letters Received; Some Articles Received; Reviews; The Various Editions; Some Promotional Items and LOVE & MERCY Versus Fantasy Or Reality. I trust this E-Book edition - titled THE WILSON PROJECT - THE ILLUMINATED EDITION - will find an equally receptive audience."

"The Wilson Project" (pink cover) first edition was published in 1992. "The Wilson Project Tape #10" (gray cover) was published in 1992. "The Wilson Project Tapes 1-10" (blue/purple cover) was published in 2001. It combines the first edition with "Brian Wilson Tape #10". "The Wilson Project 2013 Edition" (gray cover) contains "The Wilson Project" first edition plus "Wilson Project Tapes 1-10". Additions include color photographs, a new format, and a new layout. "The Wilson Project The Illuminated Edition" E-Book (Pdf) contains all the material featured within "The Wilson Project 2013 Edition" plus other information and materials compiled during "THE WILSON PROJECT" period, some not included in any previous “book” editions. The new E-book edition is more or less in two parts; the first section containing the “STORY” component of the book and the second section, titled “COLLECTION OF MATERIAL”, containing all the memorabilia divided into fourteen separate categories."

I've bought every other iteration and I can't wait to read this version. Warning: it is equal parts fascinating, hilarious and disturbing. Purchased!

Finished it in two days. Outstanding read. Seems like Gary was a good guy with his heart in the right place, but a bit naive and not quite as in-step with what was hip as he seemed to think. Still, all-in-all, he pulled off a remarkable year of demo work, no matter what the result, and treated Brian very well. Best $6 purchase I can recall in a long time.

Just this: Gary may have been - was - an outstanding friend to Brian at this time in his life, but very much not the best musical collaborator and definitely exceedingly naive in his dealings with Landy. Also, leaning too much to the mystical side of things, IMO.

Yeah, an excellent book about (imo) one of the weakest musical periods in Brian's career.

That was a very sad book. Of course, it made me want to hear the music so I tracked down 21 Little Ones which had 6 of the recordings. Unfortunately, the sound quality was that of a 20 year old cassette tape. Is there a better place to find these songs?

Is there an echo on this board? Seems like somebody posted this somewhere before....
I do like the picture of a happy Brian Wilson in Dauber's avatar though. I still have that shirt!
