[Yet another old PSF thread I wanted to resurrect.]
Lately I've been in the mood for a good musical, so I'm looking for suggestions.
I just saw My Fair Lady for the first time yesterday and it blew me away. I think "I could have danced all night" is probably my new all time favorite song in a musical. After seeing all the torture and belittling Eliza goes through, the payoff with her being so ecstatically happy and empowered was incredibly satisfying. Overall, that might be my new favorite musical even if the ending is a bit flawed and it should have been Julie Andrews.
Before seeing that though, I would have said my favorite was either West Side Story or The Music Man depending on my mood. The former is incredibly passionate and has probably the strongest collection of songs. The latter has that great unique "proto-rap" singing, probably the most colorful cast of supporting characters AND the best leading man in Harold Hill. Robert Preston's performance was one of the all time greats.
I grew up watching The Sound of Music too. And while I still enjoy it, I think it's a little too sugary sweet and one dimensional now. I prefer morally gray characters like Henry Higgins, Harold Hill and Riff to the goody two shoes Maria. Still a great movie though--last year our theater did a special screening for Mother's Day so my girlfriend and I got to see it on a big screen. It really comes alive in that context, especially the magnificent opening shots of the Alps.
I enjoy Singing in the Rain but I think it's massively overrated. It has some great songs and it's legit hilarious at times. But I don't find any of the three heroes particularly compelling and I think the plot is flawed. It would have made more sense if Kathy really didn't like the movies but was won over by Don in person, rather than having her just be an uber-fan in denial the whole time. I think this gets so much praise because it's a Hollywood movie about how great Hollywood is, and tinsel town loves to jerk itself off.
What do you guys think?
