4 - it's a bit basic of course Brian's vocals are the highlight, I love when he sings in that style.

Today's song is My Little Red Book: Wasn't it a "Little Black Book?" I like it - sounds like Brian is just casually fooling around with the song. Gave it a 4.

5 - I love it in all its dissonant glory. And I love the honking saxes. Bari & bass?? The the clustered horn voicings are of the time; Don Ellis (who had rock cred) and Frank Zappa come to mind. I imagine whoever arranged the parts was listening to what was going on in jazz and progressive rock circles. About a year later you could hear that influence on TRAVELING LADY by Manfred Mann Chapter Three (check it out at about 1:35):
I think the recording conveys the idea that TM can help you to navigate the stresses of daily life, like when there is loud disruptive band practice in your living room.

Today's song is My Little Red Book: I've always liked all the different versions of this (Love's being the one I'm most familiar with). The chord structure is rather unique, and the overall tone of the song is a bit dark. Brian sounds like he's having fun with it, which makes sense considering the story behind his recording it. He almost goes over the top with it, particularly near the end, but it's harmless enough. I give it a 3. It's not a bad performance, even though Brian was just goofing off.

Today's song is My Little Red Book: Just BW goofing around. No need to listen to it more than once.

3 - Away is nice to listen to, a nice little seed of something that could have turned into a better something else. Its brevity does the job of keeping it intriguing, in an "okay, I could listen to more of that" kind of thing.

By the way the story of my little red book related by writer Keith Badman has since been debunked. He said in his book that this was the unnamed song that Brian told a reporter he was considering as a possible b-side to heroes and villains in early 1967. One problem with that story-he didn’t record it till 1968!

Be interesting learn how that rumor circulated.

I give Away a 3. It's a pleasant little clip of something that could have gone somewhere.
The slide guitar part vaguely reminds me of the soundtrack to an online game I played several years ago called Big Kahuna Reef.

I give Away a 4, it's not bad and it would have been cool to see where it went as a finished track

A 2, I guess.
Nice enough to listen to once, but fairly forgettable.

AWAY - This track is being unfairly dismissed. I think it's quite interesting.
It's a variation of something that showed up on Smile. It partly appears on Smiley Smile, too.
I need to confer with someone who can talk shop on harmony.

It really reminds me of love to say dada/cool cool water/all day (you get what I'm getting at anyways) but it's still a nice little track to listen to but nothing groundbreaking as far as I'm concerned. I give it a 3

Really good instrumentation on this one. Another track that would have been nice to hear where it was going.
A 3.

3 for I'm Confessin'. I hear some similarity to Lonely Days, which I enjoy.

Brian knows how to turn just a couple of piano chords into something phenomenal without getting bored of the same melody, it's really unique. A 4 for me.
