Even Steven - I expected this one to just an early, inferior version of Busy Doin' Nothin' (my top 5 favorite BB song), but you know what...it turned out to just as great.
Brian's vocal is not as polished, but it's fine. Additional instrumentations are stunning. With higher speed, the song sounds catchier to me.
One of many pleasant surprises from this set. 5/5.

There has been a lot of excitement around Even Steven, and while I like it a lot, I still prefer the version on the Friends album. This one's too fast. It was the right decision to slow it down. If Busy Doin' Nothing is a 5 for me (and it is) then I give Even Steven a 4.

I also think the slower take works better on Friends but I do enjoy this as well

I wonder why/where Brian got the title "Even Steven" from?

I give Even Steven a 5. It's got more life in it due to the tempo. Seems to have more percussion elements in it too.
I've been listening to it so often that when I go back to Busy Doin' Nothin' it juuuuussssstttttt drrrrrrraaaaaagggggs!

Even Steven is better than BDN, because the faster tempo gives it a bit of a harder edge, it's less fey and novelty-like.

Diamond Head alt. - I always appreciated this lovely instrumental jam, but this version, with much clearer sound and extended outro, makes me regard it in higher regard than ever. It's loose yet elaborated, and it could totally be on SMiLE (I know it's not a SMiLE outtake though).
Still, it's not something special like "Passing By" or "Busy Doin' Nothin', so 4/5.

I think a four is a right vote. I always liked these hawaiian sounds...

4 - I really like the percussiony things going on in this version. I still prefer the more mellow version on Friends, but this is fun.

New Song (TM) - I've come to appreciate the album version of TM for what it is, but this is so much nicer and musically interesting, with mellow but crisp sound overall. The backing vocals are lovely, too.
I wish Brian had gone with this one, which would have sounded much less out of place on Friends.
3/5

A 2.
It is mildly interesting, but clearly a long way from being completed. I prefer the final version for sure.

I love how at :39 it goes into a part that used to be called "Spanish Guitar" and "Untitled Instrumental" and I believe even "Wings Of A Dove" (or something like that) on old bootleg tapes. I used to put that "Spanish Guitar" segment on my early SMiLE mixes, along with "Diamond Head" (after "Worms" or after "Cool Cool Water").

Love this fascinating alternate version and it somehow comes as a relief to hear Spanish Guitar finally given proper context!
I’d love to know what led Brian to evolve the track into the finished version. This is a really mood-switching piece of music; the background vocals are sweet and rich.
4/5, in the context of the finished horn version being even better.

Well this is just a bleedin’ steam train coming straight atcha!
Who needs the entire heavy metal genre when we’ve got this?
Overwhelmingly good.
Is it just me or does anyone else agree that this is the kind of driving force that Brian returned to (only with synthesizers) on Love You?

Never paid much thought to this track, so never realised how great that backing track is until now.

Guess I'm alone in my principles on this one. I can't take it seriously in any way, shape, or form. I give it a 1.
Listening to the backing track, I keep waiting for a voiceover to announce "POLICE SQUAD! In color!"
