Passing By (Alt.) - Believe it or not, this song has a special place in my heart, and this version, with much clearer sound and breathtakingly beautiful a cappella fadeout, could only make me appreciate it more. What a pretty little masterpiece this is.
5/5

Passing By... I'm sort of lukewarm to this song taken on its own, and I prefer the original version, so I gave this one a 3.

A 3 for this version.
I prefer the released version, but this is still an interesting alternative.

An admission - this is far from being one of my favourite Beach Boys’ instrumentals.
It’s just too light and a tad sappy for my tastes, and one of a handful of tracks on the original LP that make me wonder if Brian made this album to please his dad. All that bossa nova, baby …
This truncated version therefore pleases my ears. Not entirely keen on the mix at the start but the emphasised vocals and that gorgeous vocal fade win me over. As stated earlier, the Boys’ vocals on this album are some of their very finest, and this is a key example. I can’t resist those vocals. Therefore a 5.

Blame it on the Bossa Nova. I give it a 5 because it's a really clean mix and I love the vocal fade out. I've listened to this set many times since I've got it and it's my favorite one so far.

Anna Lee is a favourite, but not much going on here.

Nah, I likes this, the way the number of instruments build up quickly from the start. Inaudible chatter in the background half-way through … and whose voice is that at the end, questioning Al?
Nice little slice of life in the studio.

I give it a 2. Not much to get excited about, although, has anyone else gotten the feeling, especially in this clip, that there's a pretty heavy Neil Diamond influence? Especially when that organ part hits.

Yes, I was about to say the same thing, the I IV V progression and organ parts have a Bang-era Neil Diamond vibe.

Nice little slice of life in the studio. Jimmy Lockert asking Al if he meant to play there, Murry telling him to make his run more definite.

The original’s brevity is its genius. This extended mix showcases beautiful vocals but the pony/puppy dog lyrics are almost vomit inducing… I mean, just “why”? I could listen to the vox for ever though, especially with the sheer clarity of this mix. Well, they’re not great lyrics for sure, but the quality of everyone’s voices in 68 are so good! Dennis even sounds fabulous..I could listen to this band sing say, Cool Cool Water, or Anna Lee, for 20 minutes, even w Puppy lyrics. And who doesn’t love puppies Johnmanning ?? Ha ha. and, btw, anyone know why they didn’t stay w Dennis sing All I want to do? I SO prefer to Mike’s vocal on the released version.

I love The Beach Boys. I love friends. But the lyrics to Anna Lee are atrocious. Nice harmonies but tough for me to get around lines like “going around healing folks”

Some of these lyrics come off as sort of a commercial jingle. I feel like they're trying to sell me something. But the harmonies are very nice, so for that reason I give it a 2.

I have always loved "Ana Lee": music, lyrics, everything. 5 out of 5. With you all the way Craig. This one had me right from when I first heard it in about 1978 or 79 (I’m guessing) on a twofer LP set paired with Wild Honey, which I still have, downstairs somewhere. The lyrics are fine to my ears, no more oddball than Busy Doin’ Nothing or, perhaps closer in theme, Marcella - if Brian can write about his masseuse, then why not some hippy healer?! And the harmonies are just exquisite. The voices blend beautifully, and many of the vowels and consonants of the lyrics seem ideally placed to showcase that blend off to perfection. Love the Rishikesh reference too. Anyone know how the songwriting credits are split with this one? Rishikesh would have been on Mike’s radar for sure but the healing hands of Anna Lee just might have had more appeal for Brian.
