One of those stray thoughts that come to you - or me, anyway - at about three on a Monday afternoon: what was the first compilation by a major act to include previously unreleased material ? As regards the Beach Boys, I'm thinking 1981's Ten Years Of Harmony ("Sea Cruise" & "San Miguel"), but what about other artists ? I mean completely unreleased songs, not merely rare tracks. The original WWF version of "Across The Universe" on Past Masters doesn't qualify (and it was released in 1988 anyway). There surely must be some, but for the life of me I can't think of one.

Well if not The Beatles, why not the Stones? And lo and behold... "Three of the songs had never been released: 'My Girl', 'Ride On, Baby' and 'Sittin' on a Fence', the first of which was recorded in May 1965 during the sessions for '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction,' and the other two of which were recorded in December 1965 during the first lot of Aftermath sessions." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flowers_(Rolling_Stones_album)

In the US, there were quite a few tracks that were only released in the UK, and not seen in the US for years to decades. I actually sent away for some UK singles and EPs during the sixties. After Allen Klein won the rights to compile the early Rolling Stones recordings, many of these UK-only tracks were collected onto a US compilation album in 1972 called More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies) featuring eight songs previously unreleased in the US, all of which were conveniently included on side 4.

I see. Thanks, bb. * This* is the album in question. What a wondrous collection of stuff on side four! * Saturday Club* was a bit of an institution in the UK. Curiously, its principal host, Brian Matthew, was a big band fan!
