Hi all! This probably isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but thought I’d post something I made using Carl Wilson’s original God Only Knows vocals which I found on youtube. Whilst playing around with the vocals & learning the chords, I thought it sounded quite Vangelis/BladeRunner-esque. So I went with that idea, not trying to create something better (Would be impossible) and just trying to give a different take on the song. I’ve done my best to remain totally respectful to the original which I absolutely love, it holds lots of sentimental value for me for many reasons.
I thought I’d post here to see what you think.
Thanks & hope you enjoy it!
Ben

This could be quite polarizing, you realize, but I think it sounds lovely! The spacey effects are a nice touch. Looking at your YouTube blurb, I think you'll find that the "riffs" are played by two flutes and a clarinet. Otherwise, it's a pretty cool project.

Excellent stuff jk! Thanks for listening and for reading the blurb too (Wasn’t sure if anyone would be bothered enough to read that as I do waffle on a bit lol!). That’s interesting info about those riffs, I absolutely agonised about getting them to sound correct. They sound so simple at first, but when you break down what is there they are very complex, a bit like the whole song really

I like it! Maybe it’s because I’m listening on a computer, but the vocals are kind of hard to hear. Cool combination though. Very creative! Thanks for sharing with us!

Many thanks for having a listen carllove! Interesting what you say about the vocals because I actually think they are too loud in places lol! Certainly at the end when all the voices are layered together. I did notice that listening to it out of a mobile phone doesn't sound the best as you can't hear the changing bassline at the end (When the video fades out) which is a shame. Ideally, its best to be listening out of stereo speakers. Really pleased you liked it though, thanks again!

I listened to it again with headphones and the vocals were much clearer. Very sonically pleasing.

Ben, I absolutely love the Blade Runner franchise and I think you've done an incredible job in capturing the trippy atmospherics of the 2049 movie whilst managing to weave Carl's dream-like voice into the mix . Very well done mate, I liked it a lot.

Great music can be appropriated and reshaped successfully when someone has respect for the original version and leaves its spirit and intentions intact. I feel that this is definitely the case here and it reinforces the idea that Brian's music and Carl's voice will still be a touchstone for humanity for as long as there's a human race. "As long as there are stars above you (us)" indeed! Very nice work...

Actually, when listening to it again myself I noticed a few places where I could tweak the vocal levels a bit. I leave that for the next version

Cheers for writing this sneakpete77! Really nice to hear you are a fan of Blade Runner too! I wasn't sure what I thought of Blade Runner 2049 when I first watched it, but after several more viewings I've grown to really like it. I just happened to be learning the chords to God Only Knows on my synth the same day I decided to re-watch Blade Runner 2049 and something clicked

Ben, this is technically on topic, because it relates directly to your original post albeit the visuals rather than the music, but flirting dangerously close to a friendly warning from our tolerant Mods, so here are a couple of pics and some info that you may find interesting, plus all of this is local to me: That’s the modest house (the right hand portion with the kid’s bike propped up against the wall) in the Hartburn suburb of Stockton on Tees, across the other side of town and about ten minutes from where I live, where the future Sir Ridley Scott lived with his parents during his teenage years. He spent seven of those years studying at the West Hartlepool College of Art, which proved pivotal in his choice of career. His journey to and from college took him past the industrial centre of Teesside which at the time consisted mostly of sprawling steelworks and chemical processing plants adjacent to the site which would shortly house the petroleum refineries of Teesport. He is on record as saying that these vistas at night would eventually inspire the futuristically bleak vision of Los Angeles that he shared with art director David Snyder, the Academy Award nominee for Blade Runner in 1983. This is the Huntsman chemical plant from that time, now demolished and part of a vast nature reserve.

This is the Huntsman chemical plant from that time, now demolished and part of a vast nature reserve. Cheers for this, that's fascinating about the steelworks / chemical plant picture! If you squint your eyes a little it really does look just like the opening shot of Blade Runner doesn't it! That opening scene of Blade Runner really had an effect on me (And clearly loads of other people). My older brother recorded Blade Runner on video when it was first shown on TV, we had no idea what we were in for. It was upsetting seeing the earth in such a mess on its last legs, yet at the same time it was weirdly beautiful, with cool blue neon lit buildings and flying cars, all backed up with Vangelis's music score. I can still remember the music at the opening credits went by, with the single hit pitched synth string switching to the reverby drums as "BLADE RUNNER" eventually appeared in red text - It completely freaks you out before you've even seen opening shot of LA! I'm pretty sure the film wasn't intended for a kid my age, but I actually think it worked in its favour. I didn't really understand it and I wasn't critical of anything, I just really enjoyed it thinking one day I'd be able to understand everything I was watching at it would be cool
