And Heroes was out in August of 1966. Don't they need about 6 weeks lead time to get a record out? Heroes almost seems the thematic overview of the project. Surf's up almost seems the culminating project more than the initiation. All a mystery, I guess... 🤷♀️ "Heroes..." was released in July of 1967. Recording began in May 1966. There is an interesting chronology saying that Brian brought Parks in after he started writing Heroes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroes_and_Villains

Maybe he had an idea back then but only started actually working on it in '66/'67? Maybe he was mistaken… (maybe I'm mistaken!).

Interesting is that it was (according to wiki) the first project they worked on. Right after Pet Sounds. (I did love You're Welcome on the flip side.)

My brother bought the single of "H&V", which I remember was quite an earful at the time and required a bit of thought. The more accessible (and magical) B-side has ended up in at least one SMiLE mix: www.mixcloud.com/Mujan/aquarian-smile/

About 5 years ago his business card was posted on Twitter, so I sent him an email, explaining that I loved the lyrics/contributions to the Smile album.
He responded that next day (super promptly given the time he received it - I’m based in England) with a poem for me, really lovely and with such kind words.
I’ll never forget it, I think he’s a sweetheart. It is a shame that I only know his work with the Beach Boys, are there any other songs y’all know from him that you enjoy?

Well, there are some recommendations made earlier in this thread that you might like to follow up. Me, I've been grappling with his 1967 album Song Cycle for decades -- in fact, I'm grappling with it right now. I should love it; I love Charles Ives and Percy Grainger, after all. Anyway, give it a try if you haven't already. (I do think his later collaboration with Brian, Orange Crate Art, is absolutely gorgeous.) www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k1Bu0BkO_QMQNUTnVbEAY9SnSuX6eJi6wen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Song_Cycle_(album)

Thanks for sharing the link JK, I listened to Song Cycle, for me it’s one of those albums that I I like the art but wouldn’t really listen to often (with the exception of Public Domain which is my favourite).
