Anyone willing to talk a little bit about the monkeys as they go through their farewell tour. There's some talk that the monkees farewell tour is actually not a farewell, because they're going to be with the beach boys are at least with Mike and Bruce on a sea cruise?

@theprofessor : it's sad but true. You had quite a few responses to your ABBA thread when it was in the main BB section. It was moved to this section (where it belongs) and there hasn't been a single new post since then. It looks like this thread is suffering a similar fate. I hope I'm proved wrong... The least I can do is play a Monkees tune while I'm here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listen_to_the_Band_(song)

Since this is up, has anyone noticed the Save Michael Nesmith thing that’s been going on lately?

Since this is up, has anyone noticed the Save Michael Nesmith thing that’s been going on lately? I have now! According to MT_Promises at Reddit a year ago, "People are saying his assistant is taking control of his affairs and pushing others out isolating him. Taking advantage of him because of his age, presumably for his money." They add, "This isn't unique. Casey Kasem's children fought with his wife over conservatorship. Right now there's similar controversy over Britney Spears." Sad, if it's true.

I've been a Monkees fan all of my life, but I have zero interest in two of the guys touring as the Monkees (sound familiar?). They say it's a farewell, and it may be as far as the two of them working together, but Micky is going to be out there until he drops dead onstage. I saw him in concert back in 2006 at the fair, on an oldies bill with Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone, Tommy James and the Shondells, The Turtles featuring Flo and Eddie, and the Grass Roots. It was a large crowd, and the energy from the crowd seemed to inspire all of the acts. A year later, I saw Micky playing a much smaller event outside the local mall. There may have been 200 people there, tops. Since then, he seems to come through the area at least once a year; doesn't seem to matter to him the size of the event or the crowd, but I find it depressing watching him just playing anywhere he can attract three people and a dog. Michael, on the other hand, chooses his spots. Saw him at the Neptune Theater in 2013, very intimate setting, perfect acoustics, and only one Monkees song performed the entire show. He seemed genuinely surprised at the reaction to the First National Band and solo tunes. I'm not worried about Nez. He's a sharp cookie; older than he used to be, but aren't we all?

It was their (in my view) abysmal TV show that almost put me off them for good -- sort of AHDN for losers. But the singles were unfailingly stellar -- I found the two aspects difficult to reconcile. Once again, time has done its work and relegated "their" show to the dustbin of history. Not that I look for deep cuts, but this minor hit certainly deserved a better fate. I believe Jack Nitzsche was involved, although the wiki page for "Porpoise Song" makes no mention of him: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porpoise_Song

R.I.P. MICHAEL NESMITH, who died of natural causes today aged 78.
Thank you, sir, for helping supply the soundtrack of my youth. Although I wasn't a great fan of The Monkees, you were always there as a guiding light in the mid to late sixties. You will be missed by many.

Anyone who likes Python, early SNL, and the Monkees TV series needs to watch Elephant Parts.

The official name was actually The Monkees Present the Mike and Micky show, or something to that effect. The last time I saw the Monkees was 1997. Nez was supposed to be on that tour, but he backed out. I did see Peter back in 2001 with his band Shoe Suede Blues, enjoyed that, because they only did a few Monkees songs. Peter really got to flex his guitar playing chops doing blues and rockabilly songs. I saw Nez in 2013 doing an evening of solo and First National Band songs; again, very enjoyable evening of music. From what I've seen of Micky Dolenz in recent years, he should have hung it up a long time ago. I felt embarrassed for him. But as fate has it, he is the last Monkee standing, and he'll probably still be out there at 90 singing the old hits.

From what I've seen from Micky in the last nine years, he is absolutely in no way ready to hang it up! He's still a helluva showman and still has pretty much his full range intact.

I know he doesn't WANT to give it up. He just works all the time. When he wasn't touring with Mike or Peter, he was doing shows with other oldies acts, or on his own; large crowds or smalls, he's just always out there. Maybe he's got ex-wives to pay for. I find his whole act embarrassing, right down to the stupid fedora that never leaves his head.

Michael Nesmith was the one that helped pull the band out of the repetitive cycle they were trapped in. Miss him very much.
