Looks like the great band ABBA is coming back in spectacular fashion with a new album and a Innovative revolutionary concert with digital avatars in a specially built stadium in London. It was under wraps now the marketing is everywhere and strong and the interviews are clear and moving and the whole world seems to be gearing up for the release of their new album on November 5th and then these amazing concerts with their avatars based on actual real recordings and performances by the band members who were covered up with technology and photographed by hundreds of cameras.
Meanwhile The Beach Boys...

The new songs are grrrrrr8, but I'm a bit concerned about the Digital versions.
I get they're older now and might not want to do a whole concert, but I think they should have gone with their "natural" selves for the promos.

I saw a story on this on CBS Sunday Morning. The avatars look more than a little creepy to me.

Enjoy the new album 'cause I read the other day that they're breaking up for good now.
Prof, where do you want me to park this thread? It's off topic.

I think this project, much like all of their work, will be built and covered with a lot of studio wizardry and expertise.
No doubt, the new album is going to sell like hot cakes just to see if it's like what people remember. The new songs sound everything like Abba as one would expect, but other bands/artists have also done the same with albums that were flops. For Abba though, what makes it more interesting and exciting, is the length of time there has been between and moreso also! It includes all of the original members! Woop Woop! Benny and Bjorn are no slouch operator's though either, they know where it's at. There's an interview somewhere recently where they were saying, 'we know we're not young, hip, good looking, etc etc like we used to be', hence the use of the modern technology to bring them back to the 'stage' and release new music. They made a funny comment too about the difference between today's artists and themselves, 'In our day, we had to tour to sell records to make money, now people make records, but need to tour and sell merchandise to make money'. They really felt their era was the best era, to financially gain.

Yes so sorry. I suppose I put this in the wrong place and it should go wherever discussions that do not concern The Beach Boys would go. I should have looked more closely at the different rubrics. Do we have a section that discusses other bands and other issues? My ability to tie to The Beach Boys was tenuous and oblique. Just by way of contrasting what seems like an incredibly well produced reunion in comparison to the very confusing things that are going on concerning our boys. Some members have mentioned that they have heard the songs? Are one or two released already? I couldn't find anything on tidal. The album comes out on November 6th. If anyone has a link to a couple of pre-released songs please let us know. Again sorry for the inconvenience of not posting under the appropriate rubric. quote author=" Mikie" source="/post/46797/thread" timestamp="1635739372"]Enjoy the new album 'cause I read the other day that they're breaking up for good now. Meanwhile The Beach Boys... The relevant phrase is "coming back": their last original album was released 40 years ago this month since when (compilations except) near complete silence. The Beach Boys, on the other hand, never went away, thus any comparison is at best specious. Also, marketing.

Keep hearing this one on that there radio, and can’t help but think the bass line owes a fair bit to WibN!

Do we have a section that discusses other bands and other issues?Errrm... how about * here*, prof? No wonder it's pretty one-sided over there. You’re over there all by your lonesome most of the time. I joined Hoffman to discuss other bands a couple of years ago! All four members alive and willing to at least put out a new record after 40 years is pretty astonishing. I recall they were offered some insane amount of money maybe 15 years ago to reunite and they didn’t want to. To me it made more sense to let the past be the past rather than fake it like Buckingham and Nicks have done off and on for decades just to keep the money rolling in. I think they did this more because millions of fans have wanted this for decades and finally figured why not. None of them need the money. As cool as the album may be, the hologram stuff ….. don’t like it. It’s like Star Trek and the Holodeck….weird and…well really weird. As far as The Beach Boys go, I’ve been saying for years a high quality Broadway play like Mama Mia or Jersey Boys would be huge to keep the legacy going. Much more than Feel Flows or any more 60 big ones nonsense. Those plays captured a lot of new fans. Not sure what Iconic has planned if much of anything. I sure would never want to see digital Beach Boys but I recall something like that being mentioned earlier this year when all of that Iconic stuff broke. I can’t even stand streaming and this crap sounds like it might be the future.

Yes, so this is a most welcome addition! I used to be at Hoffman every day but gave up in the end -- there was just too much of it!

Keep hearing this one on that there radio, and can’t help but think the bass line owes a fair bit to WibN! Maybe it's the rhythm that does it. It's easy to "think in" Frank and Carl's accordions doing their triple bellow shakes...

I haven't heard the new songs, but I liked the old stuff. They sure did a lot of tv in the US back in the 70s 80s. Fell in love with Agnetha. I don't doubt Bjorn and Benny's ability to come up with strong new material. The holograms? Mixed feelings. Imagine going to the concert and falling in love with a hologram of Agnetha as she looked 40 years ago.

For years, "Dancing Queen" was ABBA and ABBA were "Dancing Queen" in my book -- rather like "Louie Louie" and The Kingsmen. Recently the odd TV documentary and online opinion in general brought me to my senses and made me reconsider! That said, I'm not too interested in new songs -- this hologram business isn't helping. Kate Bush did it better -- no new material, just a stunning show. And she was actually there, singing what was within her range and leaving out the high stuff.
