Released within a few months of each other, both albums marked a simplified production away from Brian Wilson's previous lavish studio creations. And yet, both LPs couldn't be more different in musical style, from Smiley Smile's versions of the psychedelic Smile songs, to Wild Honey's Motown roots. These are difficult choices, as usual!

Better than the last lineup. I think what I consider a prelude track should be apart from the rest of the tracks. (Our Prayer)
This was some discovery for me - I guess overall it is Wild Honey!
Not exclusively - and maybe GV v. Darlin’ is not a fair fight.

Not exclusively - and maybe GV v. Darlin’ is not a fair fight. Smile is unique, not only because it was a reconstruction of something that was never finished or originally released in that format, but also because it had the prelude and link tracks. However, since "Our Prayer" was actually released as a stand-alone track on 20/20 (like "Mama Says" was on Wild Honey), I did include it in the Smile VS Pet Sounds comparison thread. Perhaps Pet Sounds should have been compared to a "legitimate" album, but I wonder what other Beach Boys album would have had a remote chance up against it.

There is a rationale but how do we compare WIBN to a prelude that might have been released but it was not a hit and used in film? So then, that bumps down to YSBIM v. Heroes which also had chart traction. As a complete work - I still love Smiley - but track-by-track they stand better independently, on own two their feet. I don’t consider Smiley an illegitimate album even without Surf’s Up, which would have given it the anchor that it required. And the real cover. They could have released Smile vol 2 (or Smiley) which might sound sacrilegious but that is ok by me. And explained that the concept was the journey through America with whatever social construct they wanted to use as a message. Fans did not know and would not have known any better in 1967.

I'm shocked that the Smiley Smile songs got only two votes, compared to the Wild Honey LP. "Good Vibrations," obviously. But the only other song that won was "Wonderful." Even "Heroes and Villains" lost to "Wild Honey," and "Vegetables" lost to "Aren't You Glad."
The critics always point to "Smiley Smile" as an underground classic album, but even we fanatical Beach Boys fans seem to hate the album with a passion!
