Capitol Records wanted a new album out for the 1965 holiday season, so Brian and the band eventually came up with a party themed album. It turned out to be a big hit, as the album made it to #6 on the charts. The single Barbara Ann was a surprise hit, making it all the way to #2 on the hot 100. Attachments:

8. The gaiety album. DTY is better than Everlys. Much better. Songs they like to sing when relaxed, joined by friends. You hear people's voices talking - attention: it's party.

"There's No Other" and "Devoted To You" aside, I cannot for the life of me warm to this album. Give me the 45 version of "Barbara Ann" any day. I see somebody gave this a one. I'd say anything lower than five is an insult. A lot of hard work went into it.

Party! is a 10/10 for me. It's far from perfect, it's loose and goofy and that's what I love about it. I can't rate it on a critical level because it wasn't ever intended to be art. It's a fun listen all the way through and one of my all time go-to cheer-up albums.

It's a fun listen all the way through and one of my all time go-to cheer-up albums. Brian wanted it to sound loose, goofy and off the cuff. However, it was highly staged and structured 'event.' It's as artful a record as any ever he made. I also consider it to be the group's most consistent album; it may not have been all killer but there was definitely no filler.

I love the Party sessions! They're a blast. And also very illuminating. @sbonilla, while to some extent I agree that there is certainly artfulness in the way Brian went about recording in general, the Party sessions actually reveal what I see as a much more devil may care, caution to the wind attitude on Brian's part, mostly due to the fact that his mind was on his "real" art project, what would become Pet Sounds. The approach to the Party! album is what I think of a very clever way of cutting corners, skirting quality control and disguising Brian's lack of interest in working on Not-Pet-Sounds. The art is in the way he manipulated his contractual duties into doing something that ended up being kind of groundbreaking anyway - the first ever (is this official?) unplugged album by a normally plugged in band. And it's awesome. Not everything has to be art to be awesome or a perfect 10.

For what it is, Party! is good fun. However, the only prime BB (62-73) album I listen to less is Smiley Smile.
I like the concept slightly better than the execution. Six.

8. Cash-in or not, it's great fun, isn't it? That's why we love these guys. The Uncovered and Unplugged set made me revisit this one and I enjoy it much more lately.
