OMG - that is awful - he has been on my mind - I’ve been watching a lot of Stones video, lately - mostly live stuff and interviews. What a great artist! What a loss! He never lost the beat. Great smile, too. I only saw them once, and Blondie Chaplin was with them, at that time. Thanks for that info.

I just heard now, too. The most unassuming drummer in rock and roll. RIP, Charlie!

I’d say that it was the end of the Stones but I understand that they already had a tour booked and had already announced that he wouldn’t be playing with them…..Don’t know if his actual death will lead to a cancellation or they will carry on

It's just too much money to leave on the table. Besides, if The Who can carry on with just two original members, why not the Stones? (Not that I mind, these guys have all earned the right to do whatever they want at this point. Their legacies are already written.)
Anyway, sad news about Charlie. He was a class act and an outstanding musician. I already miss him.

Right-purists will say that the loss of one or two original members means it’s another group and should no longer be billed as the Stones but others will say that it does not detract from their experience. The Stones replaced Bill Wyman and Brian Jones, so they can replace Charlie but obviously the new drummer won’t really replace him-just replicate as best they can what he did. The loss of Brian, Dennis, Al and Carl would seem to be a way more insurmountable hurdle for a band calling itself The Beach Boys but most fans don’t seem to mind and still pay their money

Paraphrasing what I read this morning and all true. In the 58 year history of the band, Charlie didn’t miss a single concert. He grew up playing as a Jazz drummer. Without him, the Stones would be a completely different sounding band with a very different feel. His playing seemed effortless. Swinging, musical, and just cool. No one else sounded like him. The backbone of the Rolling Stones. One well-known drummer said, "Charlie Watts lays it down, and the others follow. He is the law." Watts himself explained in the book "According to the Rolling Stones". "We had a much broader, much deeper, musical background. The challenge with rock 'n' roll is the regularity of it. My thing is to make it a dance sound; it should swing and bounce.”
The Stones will never sound the same without him.

That is not cynical - not one bit. Whoever sits on that stool - only steps into Charlie’s shoes; not filling them - that is impossible. Same with our guys. They may sing Dennis’ or Carl’s parts extremely well and with great deference but they are never taking their places. Same with Charlie - what a great smile. Sublime. I don’t see Mick stopping particularly after coming through major heart surgery and jumping into the dance studio to work his moves very soon after. It is a very sad day for music. Today Charlie got Shelter -in Heaven - some great shots of him.

Well this stinks. Then again such is life. So many of the greatest are already gone and those left unfortunately are not long for this world. At least he had a lengthy and full life. What a remarkable drummer. The man truly always looked like he loved what he was doing when he played and I’m sure he did.
RIP Charlie. Thanks for the incredible ride.
