LOL, and those myriad classical sets are still available in your local charity store!
You may be right with Crossroads, unless Readers Digest or a similar direct sales joint had already been pumping out “boxes”.

If you're allowing vinyl box sets, but sticking to pop/rock, The Beach Boys Capitol Years was released in 1980. As was The Beatles Box - From Liverpool, an 8LP box set. Both of those were multi-year compilations. There was also a box set of Beatles albums in 1978, plus "Rarities," called The Beatles Collection. Of course, some original albums came in a box, like George Harrison's 3 LP All Things Must Pass and The Concert for Bangladesh.

How far we going back? Is there a particular medium we're talking about?
Another great one is the Complete Buddy Holly Set from around 1980. To this day, the audio is considered one of the best sounding Holly compilations of all time. I have a 'Readers Digest' version that sounds superb.

How it got left out of AGD's final verdict is beyond me. *If my spies are to be believed, the BB box set was released in October '67 and Donovan's in December of that year in the US and in April 1968 in the UK (Wikipedia gets it wrong). That said, Donovan's Gift may well be the first non-comp box set in pop.  * Regrettably the words "list" and "block" come to mind, not necessarily in that order.  |
