COMMENT TO ALL:
Within a short time, my book 'Recording The Beach Boys' and its associated study-video, will be removed from this message board. Many THANK YOU's to the team here at Endless Harmony for housing the study-videos, and continuing to so do.
The book talks about times past and the techniques used in those days resulting in the many songs, both published and un-released that were captured on tape and vinyl in their best form. If you have not read the book I suggest you do so now and don't delay. It will put into perspective the tracks soon to be released as the Feel Flows box set. The book will not be available for reading again until all 14 study-videos have cycled through presentation at this message board.
From those magical analog times to today's digital wonders, the music industry has seen tremendous developments and improvements over the last half-century. Properly applied, and under the very able creative supervision of Mark Linett and Alan Boyd, those new techniques and technologies can certainly bring out lost subtleties and breath new life into those tracks recorded five decades ago.
Soon we will all again be able to hear the creations of that time, mostly recorded under my watch. I am looking forward to hearing both the working as well as the final tracks, mixes, masterings, etc. For me it will bring to life many sounds I have not heard for 50 years. I'm certain memories long forgotten will again be energized when the old sonics are reproduced.
So as not to run interference with the release of Feel Flows, all study-videos will soon be suspended for a few weeks. If I can answer any questions resulting from the release of Feel Flows, I am here.
Good Listening, ~Stephen W. Desper

There are pictures included in the book of two earlier versions of Sunflower that were rejected by the record company. The first, dated 2/18/70, was Side 1 Suzie Cincinnati Good Times Our Sweet Love Tears in the Morning When Girls Get Together Slip On Through
Side 2 Add Some Music Take Care of Your Feet (With Carnival) This Whole World Got My Pay At My Window Lady
When this was rejected, they submitted a new version dated June 1, 1970 - pictured in the book.
Side 1 Loop De Loop Suzie Cincinnati San Miguel H.E.L.P. Take Good Care of Your Feet I Just Got My Pay
Side 2 Good Time Big Sur Lady When Girls Get Together Lookin' At Tomorrow 'Til I Die
But clearly this second version of Sunflower has the exact same songs, in the exact same order as the common Landlocked bootlegs!

Unlike the Sunflower labels that have the name and date, this one has neither. This may have been what they used to play new songs during radio interviews. I think they said something to the effect that, I paraphrase “this is not a new album, but songs that could be on a new album.”

I was confused at first, but, as you pointed out, the book is clearly incorrect. If there was a June 1 submission for Sunflower, I’m curious as to what songs were actually on it.

The “Landlocked” lineup was actually assembled after sunflower. There was, however, a master labeled as “Last Capitol Album” from earlier in 1970. It contained: Cotton Fields (45 version) [Duophonic] Loop De Loop All I Wanna Do Got To Know The Woman (mono mix) When Girls Get Together (track only) Break Away San Miguel Celebrate The News Deirdre The Lord's Prayer (Duophonic) Forever

My two cents...A Gen-Xer's viewpoint...take with a grain of salt perhaps....
Please keep in mind that these videos contain only Steve Desper's recollections and notes from his time with the band. He has not had access to the Beach Boys tape vault since leaving the band's inner circle at the very end of 1971. Through the work of researchers like Mark Linett, Alan Boyd, and Andrew G. Doe (and many others), we are now able to clear up long-standing misconceptions and reset the historical record. Posts on online forums can invite interpretation of intent. Steve Desper is an Endless Harmony member, contributor, and frequent visitor. He reads all of your comments. He very graciously shares his experiences and memories from half a century ago, but please know he is present and an active participant in this discussion. Steve is very proud of his work with the Beach Boys and truly loves to interact with fans of the band. He is also a Beach Boys fan, interested in finding answers to the same mysteries. He is a brilliant engineer and audio scientist who decided to share his recollections because of the ongoing interest in the band. He has taken a great deal of his time to preserve many of the details of his work from five decades ago. There will always be inconsistencies with accounts of any event in the past. It shouldn't preclude someone's memories are 'incorrect'. In fact, a difference in memories can often open a path to new revelation or insight into the emotions hidden behind a past action or event. Research from the BB tape vault has 'corrected' comments made by everyone involved with the group, especially those closest to the creative circle. One only needs to review the oral history of the SMiLE era to see how confusing it can be to sort through the past from multiple viewpoints. Brings to mind the old adage "There are three sides to every story. Your side, my side, and the truth." Steve was there, starting in 1967 until December of 1971, hovering around the console at every live show, television appearance, and recording session. With each member writing, recording and producing, there was no one who attended more sessions, or closer to the musically legacy of this period. His contributions to the Beach Boys stand for themselves. I have personally witnessed every surviving member of the original band ask him questions about equipment, sessions, etc...and watched them light up as Steve's recollection brought focus to their blurred memories. As we all we now know, there is still no definitive source for the history of the Beach Boys. Memories are not recorded or recalled without human interpretation. Researchers respectfully help sort it all out by examining all sources, regardless of content. View these videos as Steve's Beach Boys memoirs, a first-generation account of Beach Boys recording history during the late 60s-1971. Take his words, along with all the recollections by Brian, Mike, Carl, Dennis, Al, Bruce, Ricky, Blondie, and Billy..etc. All of it is valuable information--and time is ticking away for the younger fans to get answers from those who were there. It's best to not under appreciate the one's who still have the desire to respond to our questions.

Mike, I agree. New things come to light about the band every day. It has only been the last year or two that I had the full story of how Sunflower was put together, rejected by Warner’s, resubmitted, name changed to Add Some Music in March 1970. Then there was the album still owed to Capitol that had to be put together in May or early June that was never submitted due to Capitol deciding to release Live In London. Then you have It’s About Time and Cool, Cool Water added in July, while also adding some of the Capitol album material for the final track listing that was accepted and released and renamed back to Sunflower. Very understandable that it took nearly 50 years to get all of the recollections together and piece the story together.
We Beach Boys fans are very happy that Stephen Desper is willing to share his recollections and history with the band, along with sharing the wonderful music that was recorded and released under his watch. Most, if not all of us, understand that the memory can sometimes fail us, but we are sure thankful for sharing what he knows. Thank you Stephen for sharing with us here at the Endless Harmony Forum. You always have a home here with us.

My interest isn't in judging, but curiosity about the pictured documentation, which appears to show the actual acetate of the songs eventually bootlegged as Landlocked. This seems to be a real important find, actually.

The videos will be temporarily suspended on August 25, 2021. thank you for that “temporary” element. I struggle to find time to watch these (or anything else for that matter) with the degree of focus and concentration they deserve, yet love to return to them time and again; learn something new every time.
