This is a part of a longer Hal Blaine interview on YouTube. Hopefully no issues posting this clip. Quite sad really, answers a few questions..one of the comments on this clip says, "In a perfect world Hal would have been Brian's dad" ..

I thought Hal also worked on "Everything I Need" for Brian and Carnie and Wendy

I also wanted to add that I like Hal a lot, he was very helpful to Brian but he never lets the facts get in the way of a good story. There are a lot of his stories on youtube and some make you wonder, even his story of how the "Wreaking Crew" supposedly got their name: "You're gonna wreak this business". Hmmm.

It’s a really lovely song that has sadly not quite been done justice in any released form, in my opinion.
I prefer the released Wilsons version to Jeff F’s version, even though Jeff’s version is closer to the demo version, which I like most of all.
A shame The Beach Boys never worked on the song (did they?), but I’d like to hear just a slightly touched up mix/master of the demo.
Joe T is forgiven for his work on TWGMTR (even though he tried to spoil it in some ways) but it’s a slight shame he diluted Everything I Need.

All three versions utilise the same basic track as recorded with Hal, or so I've been told.

They don't, unless one track was used as a tempo reference for the other, à la apparently Soul Searchin'. The version on the Wilsons album is a re-record of every element from scratch.

I think what Hal is saying makes sense to me-in the 60s Brian gradually acquired confidence till he was so sure of himself that he was the “Stalin of the studio” but by the mid 70s he’d lost that confidence and the BBs had lost confidence in him-so that he became hesitant to take a commanding role and was constantly willing to let others second guess what he did. Clearly Brian will be remembered as a thousand times more important record producer than Joe Thomas or even Terry Melcher but I don’t think Brian believes that and therefore he doesn’t make other people believe it anymore. If you don’t assert leadership-others, probably less talented, will grab the command chair.

The demo version from the Wilsons is good; there was another version floating around on some Paley boots, where Brian says "I'm done" during the track, as in, I'm tired of recording today, I want a sandwich. Despite the demo quality, both those versions are enjoyable and miles above the officially released one; which sounds NOTHING like the original. I get why Hal would be pissed. I think Carol Kaye was also on that session with Hal, too.
Foskett's version is the best one by far. It's beautiful, haunting, evocative of 1960s Brian productions, without being an imitation. Brian's vocals on that one really stand out to me. The instrumental break as well as Brian's wordless vocal tag at the end sends chills down the spine. I'm serious. It's one of the few times where I can hear young Brian in an older Brian song. Also, to my knowledge, no auto-tune at all. A great song.
