I have a question that hopefully someone with some background knowledge can answer.
When the group one their lawsuit with Cap and got the release rights to all the post PARTY albums, they released them all in two fer style, along with 45s. Now my question is, did the group get loaned the original LP masters or did CAPITOL just run them copiessto use. I know that Carl supervised the transfer of PET SOUNDS to a new master, but I wondered about the others. Any info would be helpful.

Well, the inner gatefold for the FRIENDS/SMILEY SMILE twofer includes the notation "Mastered at Warner Bros. Recording Studios, N. Hollywood" - if that helps.

Great question, Bob -- and one I guess that either Mark or Alan (or perhaps Stephen Desper) would have to answer. It's a fact that Warner cut their own metal parts for the pressing, but whether they used the master tapes, or a copy, I don't know... Lee

I have heard that CAPITOL loaned the masters out to the group. Others said the got safetys. Just hoping to get some clarity.

I bought the twofers when they came out- two albums were fake stereo and two were true stereo. I still thought my original Capitol's sounded better.

From what I remember, only one uses reprocessed stereo (Smiley Smile). While Wild Honey was listed as "Stereo" on the disc, they just used the original mono mix. Still, one duophonic mix is too much. Surely in 1973 they should have realised that if you don't have a stereo mix, just use the mono. They had taken the care to keep Pet Sounds mono. A shame they didn't care enough for Smiley Smile.
