For those who may not have already seen it, buried in the ‘Reference’ section under ‘Member’s Writings’, there’s an excellent article called “Cease to Exist: The Saga of Dennis Wilson & Charles Manson”, written by EH board member Jason Penick. It’s a nice compilation of first-hand accounts from actual participants during that era, including Family members, beginning on April, 1968. Just took the time to read it and view the rare photos and I definitely recommend it! endlessharmony.boards.net/thread/1446/article-on-dennis-manson

Is that CM picture authentic from Dennis mansion? Yes. Never saw it! Is that the only known picture taken in a "Beach Boys ambient"?

The photo of Manson at 14400 was first published in Jon Stebbins' outstanding The Real Beach Boy book in 1999.

The photo of Manson at 14400 was first published in Jon Stebbins' outstanding The Real Beach Boy book in 1999. Still one of my favorite books. That whole story that Keith Reeves told about going over to Dennis' house in 1980 when Brian showed up was stunning. That really brought the issues going on at the time home. I met them both just a few months later with all of those type of issues on display. Dennis even called me Kid.

Wow, I'm flattered that my contribution merited a post on the main board! Thank you all so much for taking the time to read and for the kind words. As I was putting this piece together I frequently wondered whether anybody would be interested in reading it, and so your feedback truly means a lot to me. And please, if there's something you think I overlooked or failed to describe properly, let me know and I'll do my best to try and answer any and all questions. Thanks again! I really do appreciate this.

Yep, there's a few quotes like the one Chewy referenced upthread that I probably wouldn't have felt comfortable including if I had sourced them myself, but I figure since they were already printed elsewhere that they're fair game. Incidentally, this thread inspired me to go back to fix up a few unfortunate grammatical clams, and the article is now updated just in case anybody wanted to download a copy for their archives. Nothing like having to proofread your own work to make you appreciate the boost a good editor provides!

A fascinating read. And, considering the time and effort that go into this kind of thing, a most generous offering.

Thank you jason. Very interesting and enjoyable read. I smiled when i saw that magazine clip of dennis living with 17 girls. I remember uploading that 10 years or so ago in the magazine thread on the hostile board. Nice to see that again. thanks again for all your time and hard work doing this.

I really do appreciate this. Yes, I like the way you let the witnesses narrate through their own words, and did not editorialize - as well as providing a “glossary” of who the characters were. I think it took around an hour - (I am a slow reader.) Thank you. 👍

VDP’s story about Dennis beating up Manson always seemed a fabrication. However, the story of Grillo kicking out Manson from his office seems veritable. Kudos to Grillo. And that’s a voice who could tell a story or two (if still around).
Jason P.’s work was magnificent. The text accomplishes its purpose of letting the reader form a rather complete picture out of all the (sometimes conflicting) testimonies.

That is something that I do believe is credible, because his kid was threatened. The lion/lioness tends to emerge when one’s child is threatened with harm from someone who was ultimately a psycho, coward, manipulative, criminal who used and manipulated others to further his criminal schemes. Kissing someone’s feet upon meeting them? Feigned deference and 100% theater. He did a good job because he wove the interviews very carefully.

VDP tells the story in detail, then says he wasn’t there. Such vividly detailed account should be reproduced by any of the other 25 witnesses quoted in JP’s essay. Yet, no one does. And all that comes across is that Dennis was extremely wary (and at one point very much afraid) of Manson.

And all that comes across is that Dennis was extremely wary (and at one point very much afraid) of Manson. Good point. So it was hearsay from Parks? It would be interesting if Manson filed a police report against him for assault and battery. A line of demarcation may be Dennis’ account of seeing a guy being murdered and tossed into a well. That would do it. Mike had it in his book and that kind of alleged event that appeared to freak Dennis out tends to be credible at least from a witness point of view. Sort of what is called an “excited utterance” exception to the hearsay evidence rule, where the witness (deceased Dennis) was so emotionally fired up that it tends to be credible. Now people get private investigators as background checks when they bring in new people into their businesses. He was a smooth-talking charlatan.
