As for "Salt Lake City", that was the track that leapt out at me when I bought the Party!/ Stack-O-Tracks twofer. What a simply stunning arrangement! I think the Summer Days backing tracks are just incredible but for me it was Let Him Run Wild which really bowled me over on Stack-O-Tracks - another one where the chorus just explodes!

Realized in my last post in this thread I said top five albums if I really think about it and I meant 6 because Sunflower the one I mentioned first, is my favorite post 66….for anyone that cares!
Also thought of this… there was only one song from Today on Endless Summer, Help Me Rhonda, and the following year 6 songs from Today were on Spirit Of America. All but one, Please Let Me Wonder were side one tracks. Capitol must have thought the lyrical themes of side one were more in line with the audience expectations who purchased Endless Summer. In any case it’s rather telling that 6 out of 20 songs on Spirit of America were chosen for a follow up album to a massively successful best of collection that ushered in a ton of new fans. Today was/is that good.

The Beach Boys Today was the only original Beach Boys album where all the fast songs were on side one, and all the slow songs were on side two. I’m not sure why Brian sequenced it that way, assuming it was his decision, but I think the album might have been even better if it had been more like All Summer Long, or Shut Down Vol. 2 - with the slow longs interspersed with the fast songs. Some reviewers see the side 1/side 2 split as a bridge dividing the old Beach Boys sound (coming after All Summer Long) to the new (leading to Pet Sounds), but that doesn’t really hold up because Today was followed by Summer Days, which featured the fast songs like “California Girls,” “Amusement Parks USA,” etc. interspersed with the new sound, just like on All Summer Long.
That said, I tried resequencing Today myself, mixing the fast and slow songs, but it didn’t sound right. Probably because I’m used to hearing it sequenced the original way for over 55 years.

That is one of the reasons I love it. I like the fast songs on one side and slow songs on the second. The songs have such a flow to them, particularly on the second side.

To me, it seems like Brian's solo career has been a several decades long attempt to recapture the magic of certain past creations. Brian Wilson 1988, it's clear they were going for a Pet Sounds vibe, albeit with 80's technology. With Imagination, Joe Thomas mentioned wanting to recapture the feel of the music just before Pet Sounds - the Today/Summer Days period. And then, of course, we have BWPS. Gee, I wonder what they were going for there?
