I have been going thru several of my older CDs (I am ripping everything I own to a 8 TB backup drive in .wav format) and I am STILL consistently amazed at the early BB CD's that got released.
I have read several places that Larry Walsh, who was mastering the CDs back then, did not like the Beach Boys at all. Whether true or not, he really did a shitty job on those early CDs like ENDLESS SUMMER, MADE IN USA and others that were put together. I am always shocked because of my own time in corporate America that someone could do such a constantly shitty job and is just kept on regardless. Guess its a union thing. On ENDLESS SUMMER, Larry used duophonic mixes of mono tracks. Also, he used mono tracks of tunes issued on true stereo on the original release. The hit 45 version of FUN FUN FUN was not used on MADE IN USA, nor the correct version of WIBN. On SPIRIT OF AMERICA, the didn't use a good version of DO YOU WANNA DANCE and folded down actual stereo tracks. All in all, pretty pathetic. I had read a long time ago in a post somewhere by Brad Elliott Domenic that several of the 45 masters were missing until Mark and company came on the scene. That is simply not true, as I have done some digging and all of the tracks Brad Elliott Domenic claimed were gone were actually there. They just had to look. That was the excuse for WIBN and FUN FUN FUN single version.
Of course, I need to also remind myself that the music industry as a whole really cares little for their actual customers. Back when I was in radio, I use to scream at the sales reps etc about what crappy pressings were being manufactured and how nosily pressed 45s made our stations sound like shit. I will never forget on rep saying that Hey, the customers are stupid with no brains. Only anal OCD people like me care about sound, the average person is too stupid. My argument was always I could give a shit about the intelligence of consumers, how's about just doing a good job for it's own sake? This guy laughed.
As a quick aside, a major radio station in here in town, whom the record companies needed to promote their product, started to have their reps told that if you bring crappy sounding 45s to our station they will not get played. We don't care if its Micheal Jackson. Finally, the music director (whom I was friends with) stated ONLY DUBS FROM THE MASTERS ON REEL WILL BE USED. They would preview 45s. Once they decided to use it, the labels had to send a copy tape to be used. I found out that the cost of sending a tape came out of the rep's bonus because he should have been able to talk the station into using crappy polystyrene 45s if he was any good.

Wasn't it a kind of a similar scenario with the first CD pressings of the Beatles' albums?

Wasn't it a kind of a similar scenario with the first CD pressings of the Beatles' albums? The early Beatles CDs were kind of shot down because the first four were in mono instead of stereo. George Martin told EMI to release the first TWO in mono but EMI did the first four. And like a lot of mono CDs, they were in two track mono which made them sound worse. The same issues are part of the issues with the early Beach Boys CDs. YOU PLAY MONO MASTERS BACK ON FULL HEAD STACKS. Or, as I did when I was working in radio, if you were going to make a copy of a mono tape and you wanted to be sure it was as flat mono as possible, you used a Y adapter so one channel of the playback machine went into the two inputs of the recording machine if both were stereo. But, some of these guys were lazy I guess. I mean I was 20 something and even I knew that!

I wonder what kind of pressure the Capitol mastering team of the day were under - so, CD has taken off like crazy, moved from the audiophile market to general consumer.
I would imagine a few execs screaming to get product out there asap!
That’s speculation, but I wonder if in the earlier days of the format the luxuries of tape research and attention to detail were sacrificed by time to market demands.
Btw, Has any BB re-issue >1986 been 100% perfect to the original? There always seems to be something - wrong mix here, early fade there, extended fade on the CD only, safety master used until original mutis found in the attic remixed etc etc

As far as I know, all of the 2015 Remaster‘s are faithful to the original LPs

I won't go into WHO told me this, but it was related to me that several 45 masters besides WIBN were missing and it took until the 1990 CDs to get those masters either found or replaced. I said I thought that was bull as several that were mentioned had seen releases in the 1980s on CD, but no, I was told that when the 1990 CDs were starting to be put together, those masters weren't there and almost didn't get released. As for WIBN, until the NYC safety was sent back home, those putting together the mid-80s CDs did not have even have a version of that track to use. This is when I said bullshit. Here are the masters that should have been pulled if these tracks were needed and couldn't be found back then. To wit (with the listing that was given to me):
45 masters that were missing:
I Get Around: I said they could have pulled the mono version of ALL SUMMER LONG. I really don't believe this was missing. It was on ENDLESS SUMMER and MADE IN USA.
Fun Fun Fun: Pull the LP master for the various artists SUMMER MEANS FUN with the 45 mix.
Be True To Your School: Pull the LP master for BE TRUE TO YOUR SCHOOL with the 45 mix. Again, I really don't believe this was missing. It was on MADE IN USA.
The Warmth Of The Sun: Pull the mono version of SHUT DOWN VOL. 2 where the 45 master was sourced from.
Don't Worry Baby: This is one that I didn't know where to turn as the mono version of SHUT DOWN VOL. 2 has a different mix.
Wouldn't It Be Nice: This one always got me. Even Alan B. talked about this to me, as well as David Leaf. I said, they could have pulled the master for the comp SUNSHINE DREAM. The mono version of this track is on there and was released in 1982.
