There is a discussion going on about weird comps going on when I came across this new comp from Japan. It's really a great looking comp with a great selection of tunes.

I stopped collecting comps years ago (with exception to the Copyright Extension releases of course). I just don't see the point if you have all the songs elsewhere, including stereo versions. Shoot me for not being a "completest" or collector of imports, especially if they're Greatest Hits compilations. Even if it has cool artwork. I don't even bother to download them for free. Not to take away from your CD, Petsite; it's nice. A good one to give to the uninitiated prospective fan.

I would not spend the $70 this one costs. I am constantly amazed at the thought Japan puts into their comps. They have always put out superior products. My collecting of comps heated up several years back when I was searching for mono tracks. The 2008 comp SURF'S UP from the UK was great in that respect. Some tracks came from the GV box, but several were unavailable elsewhere like Keep An Eye On Summer and Lonely Sea. It was before the 2012 mono releases.

I too gave up on Beach Boys comps years ago (although I generally seek out comps of nearly every other band), but this has to be one of the best compiled and sequenced ones I've seen. A number of rather interesting inclusions...Gettin' Hungry, for instance. Although I don't see any other Smiley tracks (other than GV and H&V).
This would be an excellent Beach Boys fan starter kit. Nice mix of the obvious hits and some not so obvious cuts that would be a quick enlightenment for any newbie.

As I have mentioned ad nausea, I LOVE the SURF'S UP Reader's Digest comp from the UK from 2008. Here is the track listing (Our Prayer and Wonderful on Disc 3 are the SMiLE versions):
There isn't a stereo track until SURF'S UP (track 4) on disk 3. Even BUSY DOIN' NOTHING is in mono (yes I know a fold down mix). The sound quality is excellent throughout. A GREAT set especially for a new fan. I am commenting about this because I came across a release from Reader's Digest in Germany back during the pandemic that really seems cool as well. It dates from 2009 and has a fantastic line up. I am still trying to find out what the mono/stereo balance is. But here is the track listing. Really well put together (except for the filler track from SD Vol. 2). Also has several bonus tracks as well. Another great starter kit.

Well, I just found the 2009 RD set from Germany on sale for $25 including shipping from Germany. I will report back when I have it.

Look, why don't they just stop effing around with compilation names and just call 'em, We're Going to Pretend The Beach Boys Did Nothing in the '70s
