Why was today and summer days etc never mixed to stereo when the earlier albums were?

I can't think of any reason why this question isn't appropriate here.
The answer is something along the lines of Brian taking control of his productions to the extent where he could pretty much dictate what he wanted, and he didn't want stereo mixes, so they didn't do them.

Brian set a directive to stop doing stereo mixes of his LPs. It was Chuck Britz that usually did the stereo mixes. Also, starting with Summer Days, Brian recorded on 8 Track machines and Western didn't even have an 8 Track so mixing down to stereo wasn't even an option anymore for Chuck.

Facinating. sorry i posted in wrong area this morning i saw the world general twice and got discomobliated. been up 24 hours learning about how to fix my Edison Disc player. Took a beach boys break to clear my head and my brain spring detached. Thanks everybody. Yeah i knew Britz did the stereo but your explination of Brian gaining more control to do it his way, WOW. Then what do we know about the Friends area- did Capitol force him to go stereo???

This would be a good one for Steve Desper, but I get the sense it was less that Capitol forced anything, and more that the times did. It was just hard all around to justify LP mono mixes by then when stereo was a pretty established way of home listening by then.

I think of the Beatles at this time. Stereo mixes were done for the money, that was it. They spent weeks mixing Pepper into mono and just a few hours mixing to stereo. After Pepper, they made their mixes different on purpose to try and get people to buy both mono and stereo LPS. McCartney later admitted as much in interviews in the 80s.
I use to be one of those obnoxious people who slammed the duophonic mixes on US Beatles LP. It became clear as we finally got inside info starting in the 80s that duophonic mixes were on CAPITOL Beatles LPs because George Martin didn't bother to make stereo mixes of a lot of Beatles' tunes. The first few Beatles' LPS could be forgiven. But after EMI knew that all Beatles tunes would be put on LPS in the US, they should have automatically made stereo mixes of EVERY Beatles track. Martin even complained about duophonic tracks when talking to CAPITOL. Really???

I addressed this topic in detail in my podcast about a year ago. Mind you, it's just a theory, but a pretty plausible one.
Skip to about 1:29:48 if you don't want the non-Brian stuff.
