Hi all. The new episode of PET SQUARES, the Geek's Guide to the Beach Boys, is now up on youTube. We deconstruct - boy do we deconstruct - the SURFER GIRL album with much detail and, hopefully, humour, with input from many Beach Boys experts and most especially Craig Slowinski (along with some good-natured hagglings over minutiae with his research team). Watch, enjoy, search for the low G on "Surfer Girl," subscribe if you like!

No mas! Looks like BRI pulled it! Stupid, stupid, stupid. Seriously dumbass move. Dang it I only watched the first ten minutes. The act of having other things to do has forced me to miss out on the rest. That was dumb, I didn’t see a single thing wrong with it up until I had to leave.

The "thing wrong with it", in the eyes of BRI/IAG, was that it wasn't officially sanctioned (technically, it's copyright infringement, but everyone and their mother does that on YouTube).
Edit: my bad on the CI claim. It's not.

A great opportunity to generate interest among old and new fans and potential "$$$ales" squandered. There's a field sales rep for Capitol rolling in his Chrysler as we speak.
BRI may feed us the music, but the community certainly picks up the tab - strange move.

Yes, he didn't play music from the albums. Just talked about them, so I'm trying to figure out what the problem is.

Fingers crossed it's a minor misunderstanding that can be quickly resolved to everyone's mutual benefit.
Adam, keep us posted if you're able.

I just woke up (I'm living in Indonesia these days) to find out about it. Back channels have informed me that this was a clerical error and to upload the show again, but that doesn't help the copyright strike that's been erroneously attached to my account, so I am having some words with BRI. They apparently confused my video with someone who posted the whole album.
This past week has alerted to me to just how much bullying youTube creators are subject to from large copyright holders and digital distributors. We are strongly discouraged from fighting copyright claims. I nearly had the last ADAM WALKS AROUND pulled because I fought CDBaby claiming monetization of the whole video based on one two minute cue that I had obtained sync clearance for. I was not given the opportunity to upload the agreement and they waited until the last minute to contact the copyright owner to confirm. Had he not been on the ball, that video would have come down too.
I am a very stubborn man with lots of time so expect that the video will return once BRI and I have become better acquainted.

I have been told "through channels" BRI has sent a letter of rescindment to youTube. Hopefully that is sufficient, youTube will act on it and the show will be back up tomorrow.

Bummer. They don't know a good advert when they see it... Yes, I can't see why they would care. Will other reviews shows be eliminated? I was up to "South Bay Surfer" when I took a break from the show yesterday, and I am here this morning looking to see why/what happened.

I've been privately told what happened and the whole thing is a result of a simple clerical error. I won't get into details so as not to embarrass anybody, and efforts have been made to rectify the situation, but it was really silly. It just got passed down the chain without question. Mistakes happen, but this system for monitoring copyright on youTube is pretty messed up. They really don't make it easy to challenge bogus claims and the presumption is always in favor of the claimant. Imagine if I didn't know anybody that could help me straighten it out.

If they keep making these kinds of mistakes half of YouTube will go missing. Most of it is politics, music clips, and review shows. Don't see how yours was any different than any of the others. SMiLE re-mixers will go nuts.

Thank you Adam. And I want to thank you for taking the time to reply to all my long-winded comments on there. I think I typed that in a reply, but I'm not sure it ever went through as I was literally answering a quote and by the time I hit post, the whole thing was gone.
As much as it's frustrating for you, I'm glad it was only an error, because it was clear to me that you did go out of your way to avoid any potential copyright infringement on those videos. It was totally baffling. - It made me think "what, people can't even talk about music they like any more?"
That being said, I was loving them and really enjoying your take on things.

Well, the takedown notice still has not been rescinded, so make of that what you will. I am hearing it is an issue with youTube, but given how quick they were to take the video down and to cater to copyright owners in general, I find that odd. It is concerning, because in theory this means anybody posting any Beach Boys content whatsoever - even if it's just talking about the band - is at risk for a copyright strike, which is like dropping a nuclear bomb on your youTube channel. Even if it's an honest error, and I believe it was, it's not a good look. I already have people emailing me because they are afraid to upload Beach Boys covers to youTube. EDIT: The video has been reinstated as of a few minutes ago, so full credit to BRI for prompt action. Through their representatives they made it clear that this was a clerical error and does not represent a new stricter policy against youTube creators of Beach Boys-related content.

FWIW, I've been uploading episodes of my podcast to YouTube gradually and a lot of them use short sound bites (including BRI-owned stuff) that set off their copyright claim detectors. BUT, YouTube hasn't been taking the videos down or muting them -- they're just preventing me from attempts to monetize from the videos (understandable).

Just watched it, and if you've not yet, then do so ASAP - it's a great survey of a fine album by someone who Knows His Stuff, aided and abetted by other people who Seriously Know Their Stuff.
A question: back in the dim, distant mists of time, I distinctly recall hearing the track for "Our Car Club" with The Honeys singing "rabbit's foot, rabbit's foot" over the fade. Thought it was on SOT but, nope. Anyone care to enlighten me ?
