The rising of the sun, the time has finally come for the tribe to farewell The Beach Boys Label Debut Survivor by eliminating the runners up and determining the Series Ultimate Survivor.
The nominees:
Surfin' Safari - the titular track of team BB's charming, energetic but, for some, inauspicious debut, that established the band as they rode the back of the So.Cal (by way of Hawaii) sporting and lifestyle phenomenon
This Whole World - Sunflower's second offering and Brian's cosmic ode to the motherlode of the life eternal - love - rolls and rambles like a fantastic dream through the entire universe and back again within a breathless 2 minutes. Amazing!!!
Good Timin' and Baby Blue, tied Survivors from LA (Light Album) - almost a BOSS match between Brian and Dennis with Carl as the key link between the two tunes, Brian and Carl's retro homage to the beloved doo-wop glistens buoyed by the angelic background vocals and tight backing track, while Dennis's insomnia tinged hymn to love and lust washes from the speakers in waves of delirious tenderness
Problem Child - the appropriately named waif from the band's lost years providing soundtrack material to sympathetic passers-by, I'm suddenly reminded I may not have included Crocodile Rock in that heat, but does it matter (no)?
The Warmth Of The Sun featuring Willie Nelson - from the enigmatically numbered but thankfully discontinued series Stars and Stripes, Vol 1 - the grizzled country king of doobies puts a unique step & spin on Brian and Mike's yearning tragic classic

Ah this is going to be pretty difficult. Voting off Problem Child and the Willie Nelson one. Surfin Safari is too enjoyable to get the axe just yet for me.

Good Timin' is the one I'd like to see on the podium at the end of all this, so everything else is fair game, begining with SS and PC.

There is only one winner, and it is getting all the votes except for you and a couple of others. Love "Good Timin'", but "This Whole World" is/will be impossible to beat. |
