The master take was sped up for release on three different singles (Candix-331, X-301, and Candix-301), and then the Surfin' Safari album. The master take was later restored to the original speed and released on "Lost and Found" as well as the "Good Vibrations" box set.

I sit to be corrected.

For a long time it was assumed the Capitol "version" of "Surfin'" was a rerecording, until a memo was discovered in the 80s from Hite Morgan giving his permission for them to use the Candix master.

I’m also open for correction, but I’m almost 100% sure that the sped up version was only used for the album. The single uses the proper speed.

I believe the “surfer stomp” was a dance with specific steps that predated the song Surfin’.

Hite Morgan's home studio. This is where the Beach Boys recorded demo versions of "Surfin", "Luau", and "Lavender" in 1961. This is where The Beach Boys recorded early studio versions of "Surfin'", “Surfin’ Safari”, "Luau", "Lavender", “Surfer Girl", "Barbie", "Judy", and Karate in late 1961 and early 1962. (It's possible some songs were recorded at Hite Morgan's "Stereo Masters" in Los Angeles).

I believe the “surfer stomp” was a dance with specific steps that predated the song Surfin’. So..... demos of "Surfin'" were recorded as early as 9/1961 (released 11/1961). Bruce's Johnston's Surfer Stomp was released not long after in January 1962. Bruce shows you how it's done on the picture sleeve:

whats the address of the 2nd picture? is that world pacific? World Pacific Studios - 8715 West Third Street, Los Angeles. Many of those early sessions were at Hite Morgan’s Stereo Masters, 5534-5538 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles.

I'll never understand how anybody could listen to the album version and not immediately recognize it as "the single...but playing back kinda fast, don'tcha think???"
