At 8:19, there’s a dude in the orange shirt to the right... based on my evidence... I think that’s Landy!!!! Bring up anything similar to this here in this new thread. Expect the Carl and The Passions thread thing tomorrow and the California Music 3 singles thing Saturday!

Yes it is. When I saw this video back in 1984, I thought it was cool Landy was there. Only later did I realize what an evil person he truly was.

Here's one I never see brought up:
I'm guessing most here would know about the September 1977 Newark airport incident that led to the brief break-up of the band. For years I thought that this situation lasted for only a few days until a band meeting took place with the lawyers (I want to say at Brian's house) and the group agreed to mend fences since they had just signed the CBS deal.
However I just came across an old message from Jeff Deutch where he mentioned being at MIU with Byron Preiss to interview the group for Preiss's book, when a call came in from Carl and everybody there applauded and rejoiced because Carl relented and said he would rejoin the group.
If this is true, this scene would have taken place in early November (at the soonest), which means Carl-- and presumably Dennis as well-- were out of the group for TWO MONTHS, not just a handful of days.
If so, it makes sense that the rest of the group would depart to Iowa with Brian in tow. Carl and Dennis ran Brother studios and probably wanted those guys the hell out of there!

The group was broken up for several months. Legal issues were ironed out at Brisn's house, but that doesn't mean the actual members went along willingly. Carl held out for a bit. If you see him in the OUR TEAM video, he is walking around in a bathrobe. I still say his vocal on SWEET SUNDAY KINDA LOVE sounds a little like he is in an altered state. Which is sad because he could have made that track soar.

One follow-up question if you know the answer... over at AGD's site I can see that the Beach Boys played a handful of dates and a TV appearance that October. I take it these were all performed minus Carl & Denny? (It does state that the October 17 Berkeley Community Theater show was a proto-Celebration gig.) In regards to your comment re: "Sweet Sunday", I agree. I dunno, in retrospect it seems like it might have been beneficial for Dennis and Carl to take some time away from the group. Dennis could have had his solo tour and finished Bamboo, and they would have both avoided that awful Australia tour.

Well, to be fair to you, I think back in '84 he still was not necessarily evil, definitely looking out for Brian's best interests. I don't think it was until a few years later when his "treatment" was starting to get, well...alarming at best, criminal at worst.

I think Landy was the same all along— there was no turning point. And Brian looked, acted and sounded weird (or weirder) right from the beginning, no matter how slim he was.
His t-shirt in the DC video is a beauty, though.

Just a little something....
That picture is from 1981 or 1982! I realized that once I noticed Carl wasn’t in the picture!!! And wouldn’t they take a picture of Sinatra if he was the main focus of this article? That’s a bit misleading, although the picture itself is pretty nice.

It is them in South Africa.

A lot of jumping around on this thread but to answer the question about 1977. The band made an appearance in New York on September 1 1977, marred by a really unpleasant business meeting. They played another show the next day in Rhode Island and then had it out at the airport. They did not exactly break up but to the reporter who happened to be with them that night it certainly looked like it was the end. Dennis suggested it was over but by October they’d cooled out and played some tense shows but apparently with little offstage love. Soon after the so called meditators decamped to MIU with Brian in tow to record the next lp. Carl and Dennis showed their feelings by mostly staying away but did pay short visits to pitch in. By this point it was clear that the band as a professional money making entity would survive but there was a great deal of tension for the next year and a lot of stress and dysfunctional behavior on the road. Possibly due to the Stress Dennis started to really decline by mid 1978 and Brian drifted back into substance abuse as well. Even steady on Carl exhibited some major troubling behavior in that year but soon straightened himself out.

In addition to a lot of business disagreements I think all the guys were having domestic issues at the time which added to the craziness. Pretty much the entire group would get divorced over the next few years. Add drugs to the mix and a few teetotalers on the other side who are pretty obsessed with clean living and it’s a more amazing story that they ended up still a band! As many have said, if they weren’t family I don’t think they’d have stayed together but blood is thicker than water

And of course at the meeting at Brian's house to get the group back together, Brian fell asleep on the floor to stay out of the fray. Carl's and Dennis' lawyer pushed for Carl to have more control but Mike/Alan/Brian over ruled him. And as Carl's and Dennis' lawyer pushed more, Stephen Love, their manager and Mike's brother did the following (from Gaines book and notes):
Finally Stephen turned on Fierstein (Carl and Dennis' lawyer), who had a hunchback and was less than five feet tall, calling him a “hideous little creature.” With that, Carl and Dennis stormed out of the room, followed by their lawyer. But the group had been officially reunited.

And you always have to love the way Brian's letter in 1982 was worded:
Nov. 5, 1982
Dear Brian,
This letter is to advise you that your services as an employee of Brother Records Inc. and otherwise are hereby terminated, effective immediately.
This action is taken in your best interest, and is not reversible.
We wish you the best of health.
Alan Jardine President - Brother Records

IIRC, Dennis became bitter when he found out (early to mid 70s) that Brian didn’t want him in the early days of the band, and had to be persuaded by their mom to let him in. Carl (understandably so) lacked confidence in Brian’s onstage consistency as a performer— and probably likewise in the studio. No wonder Brian was pushed to the extreme end of the stage behind a grand piano. Who knows what else was going on. So there were actual grudges between the Wilsons that went beyond the “Brian aligned with the meditators because he was easy to manipulate” bullshit that for some time was repeated as gospel.

Families are hard.
I wonder if it was a chicken/egg situation? Did the band have stress because of member decline or did members decline because the band had stress.

I think drifting apart as they got older when they're no longer living in each other's pockets; different priorities at home, maybe; different creative urges; drugs and drink; inability to rely on Brian to come up with the goods with any consistency; perhaps the lingering effect of the death of Murry; bad management; petty jealousies. Who knows?
