... from the BBC News website yesterday ?
"Michael Collins - one of the three crew members of the first manned mission to the Moon, Apollo 11 in 1969 - has died aged 90, his family say."

It wasn't the first manned mission to the Moon, but the first one that landed humans on the Moon. An unsung hero, he was at one time described as the loneliest man in the universe when left aboard the command module in lunar orbit while Armstrong and Aldrin were on the surface.
That's all I got!

Exactly. It was in fact the third manned mission to the moon (and the first to actually land). The first was Apollo 8 in December 1968.

I was 11 years old in July 1969. Two important things happened within that week; my first time seeing The Beach Boys live and watching Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins blast off, orbit and land on the moon. I kept a scrap book with the newspaper pictures and articles. The space program had me totally fascinated and I sat in front of the TV on the living room floor and watched as Armstrong and Aldrin descended the ladder and planted the flag. Moon gravity looked like a lot fun trepsing around the lunar surface. Just think, we witnessed one of the greatest exploits in human history. RIP Michael Collins! You flew “From There To Back Again”.

It seemed a problem with no subject-verb agreement in person/number to me, not for the accuracy of the quote but as a collective noun which is generally treated as a unit taking the 3rd person singular in the States. Not the number of manned lunar missions. It can be treated differently in British English, where it would be considered 3rd person plural. We would use "his family 'says'" - and operating as one voice or unit but "his family say" as a plural - from the BBC. linguapress.com/grammar/points/collective-nouns.htmAnd, I learned something today from that statement.

What's wrong is that the writer is yet to be hauled up in front of the United Nations to make amends for this bloody outrage!
