There are tracks that have been released previously that are no longer available to the newer fans of this music. I was talking with someone off line and realized that several tracks are not easily accessible, and some that have just been forgotten. Here are the ones I can think of off the top of my head:
California Girls - the mono 45 mix (last available on GV Volume 1, the Reader's Digest Series and the Japanese Capitol Singles Collection) Don't Worry Baby - the mono 45 mix (last available on GV Volume 2, the Starbucks CD SUMMER CRUSH and the Japanese Capitol Singles Collection) The original mono mix of the German version of In My Room (From the 1983 RARITIES LP) Friends - the mono 45 mix (last available on GV Volume 2 and the Japanese Capitol Singles Collection) Little Bird - the mono 45 mix (last available on the Japanese Capitol Singles Collection) Blue Christmas - the mono 45 mix (last available on the Japanese Capitol Singles Collection) All I Want To Do - the mono 45 mix (last available on the Japanese Capitol Singles Collection) Lady - the mono 45 mix
Just a couple that I want. I would also like the complete mono mix of the Christmas LP and the 1964 concert LP. A CD from 1988 has side one of the Christmas LP in mono and side two in stereo. Weird.

Aren’t Friends and Little Bird just fold downs? Rings a tiny bell but always happy to be corrected, I presume to know nothing! Nope, they're actual mono mixes, for the single. The UK "mono" releases of both Friends and 20/20 are fold downs, though. I prefer to call them "single channel stereo".

"Friends" is even a different vocal take -- well, assuming the single version is what was used in the promo film!
Stereo: "We've been together through the good times and the tears." Mono: "We've been together through the good times and tears."

Is the California Girls single actually different from the album? I was under the impression that they're the same, or at least I haven't determined any sonic differences. I'm prepared to be corrected though! And the single mix of Don't Worry Baby is also on Sounds of Summer California Girls:(last available on GV Volume 1, the Reader's Digest Series and the Japanese Capitol Singles Collection) Single Mono Mix: 2:45 Mono LP: 2:37 Don't Worry Baby:(last available on GV Volume 2, the Starbucks CD SUMMER CRUSH and the Japanese Capitol Singles Collection) Single Mono Mix: 2:52 Mono LP: 2:43
I think that when the mono LPs were compiled and single mixes were added to the banded LP master, they copied the single mix onto the master reel and just faded them early to avoid extra hiss and noise. The fades are longer on the single reels. The US singles collection, the GV box and Sounds Of Summer used the mono LP cuts and not the single reels as far as I can tell. But we did get the single mix of Why Do Fools Fall In Love on Warmth Of The Sun (finally)! Yeah Mark!

Don't Worry Baby is a noticeably different mix entirely on the single, and that single mix is on Sounds of Summer. I think California Girls is just the same single mix, but faded a bit early. DWB has a completely different balance, in comparison. I will listen to both versions later today. What should I look for. Also, the version on SOS fades early, so I am still not certain which version it is.

It's labeled as the "single version" on the CD so I'd say that's what it is. The balance during the guitar break is different - the lead guitar seems to be much louder in the single mix, while it's the same volume as the rest of the instruments in the album mix Thank you, I will take a listen later today when time permits (ie: after I do my chores).

We all know how unreliable Wiki is, so take this with a grain of salt:
Variations: The stereo mix of the song had been used on Shut Down Volume 2 when it was released in 1990 and 2001. A single mono mix appeared on the 20 More Good Vibrations compilation. On the 2008 Singles box set, a mono album version was used instead of the single mix. The original stereo mix of "Don't Worry Baby" had Brian's lead vocal hard-panned in the left channel, the instrumental track in the center and backing vocals on the right, and had an uneven fade out with most of the instruments abruptly fading out before the vocals.

Ok, I listen to the the following for my comparison:
The Mono "Single" mix on Sounds Of Summer and the Mono "LP" mix on the 2012 Shut Down Volume 2 remaster. As these were both done by Mark, I figured they would be the best to check. Now I can't tell if it is just the eq is different or what, but their isn't that much difference in between the two aside from some slight soundscape variations. They both fade before the versions on Summer Crush or GH Volume 2. I will keep listening. If Mark is reading this, please let us know if there is actually two different mono mixes of this track. I would think that since I Get Around was issued as a single after Shut Down Volume 2 was released, that Cap would have just pulled SDV2 and dubbed Baby from there, maybe turning up the volume at the end to capture the complete fade. As I said, Alan or Mark......HELP!
Or bring me a copy of these:

The biggest giveaway is the background vocals on the first verse. The LP mono mix has the full backing vocals like the stereo, the mono single mix does not.

Ok, there is a push in the backing vocals on the mono LP version during the first verse. The versions on Summer Crush and GH Vol 2 don't have that push. Sounds Of Summer does. The others in my list except SC and GV2 were all mono LP versions.

This is a little off the topic, but I wanted to post some things Steve Hoffman posted on his site.
"Fun, Fun, Fun" was mixed three times back then.
Mix number one was the mono 45 RPM hit mix. You can recognize it by the "push" in volume during the instrumental break and the organ highlighted. Has a nice long fade. Mixed by JOHN KRAUS at Capitol Tower from the Western Recorders three-track. Never released on CD or LP (I believe). <--- We know this is an untrue statement so let it ride.
Mix number two was the mono 33 1/3 LP mix. Easily picked out by the favoring of the GUITAR over the organ in the instrumental section. (Note that one of the lead guitars was on the vocal channel so easy to bump up). Hard to miss. Mixed by Chuck Britz at Western Recorders. On the great Capitol BB's CD MADE IN THE USA as well as the LP "Shut Down, Volume 2".
Mix number three was the infamous "Chuck Britz one handed fade out" stereo mix. Done for the stereo version of the "Shut Down, Volume 2" LP version. This is the version used on the DCC Gold CD and countless others. Great sounding mix except for the ending where Mr. Britz (in a hurry to go to lunch) decided to fade the thing right down and catch a smoke. He did his famous one handed fade. In other words, he faded the music channel right on down really fast leaving the two vocals tracks hanging in the wind. Then he reached back up and faded them down quickly. Why he didn't use the master fader and get them all down at the same time is anyone's guess. Probably the master fader was noisy or some problem or another at that point. Many stereo BB songs from this time period were faded out like this (Wendy, Little Deuce Coup, etc. Heck, on WENDY he faded out the middle vocal channel first leaving the two music tracks hanging in the wind. Very silly).
Why Do Fools Fall in Love, there are two mixes of the song. First mix done at Gold Star for the album. Second mix done at Capitol from the Gold Star three-track. They sound pretty much alike. The Capitol mix has the voices further down in the mix. They took a dub of the Capitol mix and switched the parts around, starting with the middle a capella part at the beginning.
I used the LP mix, unedited. Better mix, the one with Brian in attendance during mixing. He would have been the one to pick the "good" mix, eh?
The 3 versions/mixes of Why Do Fools Fall in Love:
1. The LP mix from the twin-track done at Gold Star (ala Phil Spector) by Larry Levine with Brian Wilson that I used, as stored on mono LP master of SHUT DOWN, VOLUME II.
2. The Capitol 45 remix from the twin-track done without Brian's OK with lowered vocal track and filtered top and bottom to make it easier to cut. Unused, stored in the old "S" reel section, marked "reject".
3. The Capitol SPLICED version which totally screws up the song (actually the same mix as number 2 but with the A&R guy's idea of a better intro). Duped from number 2. Stored in the "S" reel section (Singles). This is the version that was the "B" side of the single. If you like this "arrangement", make your own digital edits to create it; it's easy.
Note From Andrew Sandoval:
FYI: The Capitol/EMI vault had a safety phono reel tape of the "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" single version when I worked The Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2 CD's (on which it was almost included) in 1999.
Drive-In (Mono) is totally out of phase.
There are only three-channels on the original Gold Star Studio tape. Music, vocal left, vocal right. However it was mixed, the tape that ended up on the LP master reel was dubbed incorrectly and is totally out-of-phase.The mono DRIVE-IN is fold from stereo. Play your stereo version in L+R mono (in other words combine to mono). Same thing happens. Misaligned tape machine during stereo mixing = phase problems all the way down the line.
Gold Star Studios fault but Capitol gave such little crap that they didn't bother to ask Gold Star to remix a proper mono of the song. Brian didn't seem to notice either even though he went specifically to Gold Star to get that Phil Spector Sound for the song.

I was thinking of starting a thread where we could discuss every single mix/edit variation. It gets confusing with most artists and there are a lot of 45's out there with minor variations a lot of fans don't know about. It would be great to get a definitive listing of all the Beach Boys variations, but I've been lazy about compiling the information I already have! LOL

That promo mix is actually different from what was released as the single. The mono single mix is on Greatest Hits volume 2, and it's an identical recording to the stereo album version. Just a different mix. More great detail, thanks!

So the mono 45 mix of "All I Want to Do" isn't a fold? I swear to God, I learn something new every day when it comes to this band.

I have done a fold down of Drive In and digatally its easy to only use one vocal track when Mike speaks. I am guessing you could fade out one track during a fold down from stereo. But you are correct you can't just run two tracks straight to mono.

I’m pretty sure that was added to the 2015 digital re-issue of Holland, which is available from iTunes and other digital stores. Thank you - I was thinking physical releases only but you are correct.
