Howdy one, howdy all - welcome to the final individual round of BB Label debut Survivor, where we plunder and pillage the tracks of L.A. (Light Album), which shall be referred to moving forward as LA; sorry, purists and fellow OCD types, but it uses too many characters of the thread title allocation.
Released in 1979 by CBS on band cohort James Guercio’s Caribou label, the band initially decamp to Criteria Studios in Miami with Brian producing, spending two weeks getting sketchy, then getting good old Bruce back to take over and rejoin the band.
Notorious for the admittedly odd side 2 hogging inclusion of the longest released disco redux version of Here Comes The Night (rumour has it there is a version in the vaults that hasn’t stopped playing yet) and an instance of Brian’s 70s era obsession Shortenin’ Bread, but lauded for the inclusion of 2 Denny songs initially intended for his ill-fated Bambu and for some (mainly the Brexits) Al Jardine’s finest moment, lets see how things fair in the depraved and cannibalistic wonderland that is BB Survivor!
An immunity idol is in play and is “hidden” somewhere on this forum. If you find it, you have to PM me it’s location before the final round opens (I will remind the tribe). If you find it, you will have the ability to resurrect an eliminated track or eliminate a finalist to decide the outcome!
Remember, outwit, outplay, outlast!

Heat 1, I’m scuppering Full Sail, a poorly mixed maudalin middle of the road tragedy, it’s whimpy lyrics belittling the hard graft of salt dogs the seas over. However, the clanging bell is cool and I wish they’d been bold enough to slip in a reference to the narrator having gained a peg-leg at some stage of his nautical travails.

I agree, Full Sail is a bit too boring for me.

How come folks are already voting off dreamy Full Sail when that audio mess that is Shortenin’ Bread is there, rounding off the album with a sledgehammer to the ears that’s damn near impenetrable?
How come anyone wants to vote off a song about heading south to the sunshine from the cold of winter? Obviously not enough folk on this board have spent enough of their lives in chilly Yorkshire and frozen Glasgow.
How can anyone want to vote off a song with the ethereal line “where the swallows go, when they leave Capistrano”?
Shortenin’ Bread is kerbside for waste food removal.

Several times on various boards down the years. My skull jukebox lumps the two songs together and treats them the same. Apologies to all pedants;) But that doesn’t change my distaste for Shortenin Bread!

I'm voting Full Sail to save the rocking Shortenin' with its soulful Carl and booming Dennis. But it's really Goin' South that I think should go South.

Shortenin' Bread. Not quite the waste of space Here Comes the Night is, but more out of place on a smooth album like this (and it's too long)

If I randomly threw darts at this record I'd most likely hit a song I would be happy to lose.

Give me a while -- I must reacquaint myself with some of the tracks. Good call, A.

Pooff! This is difficult. I just revisited "Full Sail" and "Goin' South" on YouTube. Ye gods, how can one not melt at the sound of Carl's voice? So, I wrote the names of those two on scraps of paper, screwed them up, dropped them in my red fireman's helmet and then picked out (without looking) the one to eliminate. It was "Goin' South"...

Ah, now you’re talkin my language. LA is my second favorite BB album. I used to listen to it every morning on my hour long bus commute. This album got me through a lot. So this is going to be difficult for me, because I think the album is absolutely perfect. But I will acknowledge that HCTN does go on a tad too long, so that’s my pic.

"Shortenin’ Bread"
It plods, unlike their spirited live version with Carl's growly voice.

I remember you mentioning it in the favourite night-time music thread in the "General Discussion" section. Glad it helped you get through stuff. After hearing many negative things about this late-ish BB album, I was expecting not to like it when I gave it an initial listen a decade or so ago. But I loved it -- it sounded great from start to finish and it still does. So yes, I agree, it's hard to have to pick out "inferior" tracks!

I really love this record. It will be hard to pick at half way through, but I see a path. I see it that way. Others are going to spoil my path. I love every song, though I agree that there are some a bit better versions of some. I'll start with "Sumahama". The Lp version is my favorite.

LA for me is a bit, I repeat a bit, like 20/20 with a lot of individual productions and sounds deprieving the album of a level of unity. Listed producers are Bruce, The Beach Boys, Jim G and we know that the main shaker behind HCTN was their buddy Curt Becher - 8 producers, hence the wobbly overall cohesion.
But, like 20/20 that’s not to belie the strength of most songs and exercises, or even elements of songs where the whole she-bang bumps instead of bangs.
To jk’s comment earlier, Full Sail has a delicious Carl vocal, but then again Carl could sing a phone book and make it sound like heaven. The rest of the song needs a good shake though.

I voted Goin’ South. I literally don’t remember anything about the track compared to the rest. I gave it a shot. Didn’t like it. It’s a shame, I know some people might like it.

The only Carl vocal I’m not a fan of is live KTSA, and She’s mine from his Youngblood Album

Hey when are we going to have more polls like this? I loved doing this one! Hold your horses, nts, this one isn't over yet! Right now "HCTN" and "Shortenin' Bread" are neck and neck with seven points apiece. But I agree, they're great fun and Mr. Smith makes a wonderful job of them. So I'm guessing there will be more.

I changed my vote to "Here Comes the Night" to give "Shortenin' Bread" more room to breathe fresh air.

Oof. The edge is going out to Here Comes The Night losing. It’s a shame, it’s got some great bass playing by Joe Chemay.
