Never heard of this Cameo… is it like OnlyFans?

Never heard of this Cameo… is it like OnlyFans? No, but a Mike Love only fans sounds like something unintentionally hilarious. Basically, cameo is a website where you can pay $100, and you can have Mike or another celebrity read a script, answer a question, send you a birthday message, basically do anything you ask of them. A music reviewer I watch on YouTube sometimes uses cameo to pay for artists to talk about the backstory of a song in his videos. It’s really cool, but also extremely overpriced in my opinion.

I remember around this time last year, when all of the graduations and birthday parties and such were being canceled because of the pandemic, a lot of popular celebrities were lowering their prices on cameo, and parents would get their kids favorite celebrities to wish them a happy birthday or a happy graduation in a video. Fun stuff like that. Or as I said, you could pay the money and ask them a question, and have them send you back a response. Like for Mike, I would ask him about the creative process for the song Big Sur, because I’ve always been curious, and that’s not something that a regular interviewer would probably ask him. I mean I would ask him, if I had just $100 laying around, which I don’t

He really liked the scenery and wrote the song. He even selected a house but then took a pass. The house he had chosen was then purchased by one Alan Jardine. So bang, a great song AND a new place for Al!

But I meant more like, did he write it on a guitar, or a piano, since it’s one of the few songs were Mike wrote both the music and the lyrics it would be interesting to know about the details

I hate cameo, just as I loathe meet’n greets, and just as I abhor rock’n roll fantasy camps. But I’d gladly spend a few hundred bucks to dedicate some Mike Love messages of good vibrations and positivity to certain fans. Won’t name names.

What if board members pledge a certain amount, say $5-10 each, people nominate questions to ask, then we vote on them, and whichever make the cut, based on how much we raise, gets asked?

What if board members pledge a certain amount, say $5-10 each, people nominate questions to ask, then we vote on them, and whichever make the cut, based on how much we raise, gets asked? I’d rather questions were asked of my favourite rock stars as part of proper interviews, by bona fide journalists, than via some pay-to-blab website to be honest. In my 35 years of journalism, I’ve never paid to ask someone a question; nor has anyone I’ve worked with in that time. And for someone like Mike, or any of the other Beach Boys, the interview process is part of the career they’ve chosen, part of the (until now) accepted process of promoting their albums, live shows or whatever. And this Cameo process, as described, surely weakens the integrity of the interviewee. “Hey, you read this? Mike Love says Paul McCartney played oboe on Cool Cool Water!” “Oh yeah? Mike Love would say anything for $25, hell, he’d even wish OSD ‘Happy birthday’ for $25!” I’m sure it’s sweet for the kids getting wished a “Good, good, good, good-vibe-birthday yeah!” but it comes across a cheap and vulgar and surely risks diluting the integrity of the speaker and what’s being said?

I'd pay Mike way more than $100 to show off selections from any unpublished photos he has of the band in the studio?

In my more fevered moments, I ponder the idea of crowdfunding Al (who probably sounds closest to his 60s self) to sing the vocals from Barnyard and IIGS in studio quality for our fanmixes. I am not a well man.

I’ve been watching some of ML’s cameo videos, and have to admit I’ve softened to the cameo idea. First, he’s been commissioned quite a few of those. But what strikes me the most is that these probably are the result of a sincere urge to stay in touch with fans, which has been his raison d’etre for decades; I’m sure this pandemic has been tasking for a guy whose entire life has been going out there and reaching across BB fans. I ended up finding those clips very endearing.
That said, I’m also amazed at the level of singer’s phlegm he’s developed, not unusual in singers with long, overworked careers and not unusual in people prone to allergies. I’m sure his penchant for onstage shouting during the 80s and an unnecessary forceful singing he developed during that decade didn’t help, and I clearly remember when sometime in the latter part of the 2000 decade he got rid of extreme nasality and his voice regained smoothness and a youthful quality (this he also acknowledges in his GV autobio). Anyway, just an observation; many, many singers live with chronic phlegm and perform just the same.

We should start a Cameo gofundme for selected questions like "did you write the complaint to the 2005 lawsuit", "what all do you remember about asking VDP about crowes crying", "boxers or briefs", "is Cam right about H&V master #57045"? All the important questions.
