For years now, the Hawthorne, CA album on Spotify has been scrambled so that the disc one streams play the disc two tracks, and vice versa. Besides the obvious inconvenience, I imagine this could also have serious repercussions regarding royalty payouts. Personally, I've contacted Spotify more than once about this issue but it never gets fixed. I have no idea if anyone in the Beach Boys camp is even aware of the problem, though I assume they'd get it resolved if they did. Anyway, if you're listening Iconic, please fix this asap! I actually contacted Spotify about the Hawthorne mix-ups as well. They asked me to clarify exactly which tracks were mislabeled. I did & they said that they would correct. That was six months ago. It still bugs me that the stereo Heroes & Villains is mixed up with the Surfin’ USA demo on my playlist. Lol. I contacted them too. I can't recall too accurately, but I remember they acknowledged the issue, and committed to either doing something or nothing about it.

Anybody have any info yet on the legality of this release? I have to assume it's basically legal because of the "Boardwalk Records" copyright and what have you. But listening to it, it definitely don't sound great. And it ain't remastered. And as others have said, it sounds like a vinyl rip. I don't know. I read that the Spotify version was uploaded incorrectly, swapping L-R channels. No clue if this is fact. Somebody crossed their cables while doing a needle drop. And people still complain about the state of the Beatles' catalog. Who on earth could complain about The Beatles' catalog at this point? I mean, I wouldn't mind being able to have the original stereo mix "Strawberry Fields Forever" and a version of Yesterday & Today with all the original mixes (both stereo and mono) and maybe a few other minor things that I can't even remember, but as far as everything else, it's really very nice and tidy, especially as compared to the mess that is The Who's catalog. And unlike The Beach Boys and The Kinks and The Stones and others, The Who doesn't have such a massive discography that their catalog should be such a mess.

My main problem with the Beatles catalog digitally is that the mono Albums, at least the original UK albums, are nowhere to be found. They have the US Albums box set which has their US albums in Mono and stereo, and then the digital Sergeant Pepper box has the mono mix all the way at the bottom, but as for their regular UK albums, you pretty much are restricted to making a playlist using the US album mono tracks in the UK order unless you want to start buying physical product. But yeah, it helps that The Beatles catalog is tiny compared to The Beach Boys.

the album absoutely is not that bad at all. not the hugest fan of the calendar girl song, (but its certainly better than Anka's) but i like the oldies meets new production concept started by Brian with big ones and onto love you. In fact brian should of produced Lookig Back....

Don't think so. The name Kim Calkins comes to mind...

Thanks for posting that, Andrew. Haven't heard it in about six months. One thing that made the record work for me was that Mike's vocals sound very good.

It's always been "hip" in certain circles to regard LOOKING BACK WITH LOVE as the nadir of all Beach Boys related product. It's not so bad, really. In my view, LBWL isn't the worst Beach Boy solo album at all. (Looking at you, GETTIN' IN OVER MY HEAD.)
I really like "Rockin' the Man in the Boat"!

All a matter of taste, I guess. It's good to have this, but I've always thought it's bad easy listening; I'd much rather have a clean copy of First Love, even if he revisited several songs years later (nothing wrong with that).

True that. When it comes to Mike solo, it’s a bit like which hospice would you prefer to “move on” in.

Listened to a number of LOOKING BACK WITH LOVE tracks this morning, hopefully with fresh ears. In truth, it's not very good, but I've heard worse albums. "On and On and On" is decent. A couple of these tracks would have been fine on a hypothetical 1981 Beach Boys' studio LP, along with a few from Carl's first solo.

Mike’s 1981 solo album is leagues ahead of Carl’s. Carl’s album is just a boring lifeless sluggish listen. Bright lights and heaven are it’s only redeeming qualities. Youngblood is great though

BTW, I went to one of my favorite local record stores last week. They've had LBWL in stock for years. (They also have The Sunrays' Andrea on the shelf -- it's been there a few years; surprise nobody snatched it up. If it's still there next time I go, maybe I'll grab it. Previously they had a copy that went before they even put it in the divider.)
But I JUST noticed the sticker they put on it. I love this store so much!

Looks like this was pulled off of Spotify and Apple/iTunes now.

Looks like this was pulled off of Spotify and Apple/iTunes now. It went off a while back. My personal theory is that Iconic has acquired the rights and are putting out a Super Deluxe Reissue of it to coincide with its 40th anniversary this year.

More likely, the company that purchased Boardwalk records was sent a cease and assist and quickly complied

Am I the only one who makes fake Beach Boys albums by combining songs off of solo releases from approximately concurrent years, for example Mike’s Looking Back with Love, Carl’s Carl Wilson and Brian and Dennis’ “Hamburger Tapes” or Bambu?
