I saw the Monkees a number of times over the years and Peter always brought a lot of fun and superb musicianship to the shows. I always enjoyed the songs he wrote for the Monkees, particularly “Tear the Top Right Off my Head”, “Long Title”, and his version of “Come On In”. His harpsichord playing on “The Girl I Knew Somewhere” is tops too.

That version of "For Pete's Sake" is quite a departure from the original - mellow psychedelia! Speaking of the original version, it was one of the highlights of the TV show for me. While I hated that the show was over, I loved "For Pete's Sake" during the closing credits. As I recall, "For Pete's Sake" was only used during the second season of the show. I thought the song was so cool, especially with Mickey wailing "We gotta be free...we gotta be free..."

He will be missed. Mike seemed to be really heartbroken in his Facebook post. I never got to see them, they were too big an act to play in my hometown 6,000 seater. The Monkees were one of those groups in 1967 that you watched on Tv, but didn't talk to your friends about - cause they were a little sister's favorite, and we were all the older Beatles/Byrds fans. I would say Beach Boys, but you know how that was rolling in 1967... You know what I mean. The Monkees got tougher quick though. Put out some really great stuff. And I grew up to be a big Nesmith fan. I have all those Deluxe sets now (with all the Mike stuff they wouldn't release back then), and several of the Rhino Handmade sets. I even popped for the Blu-ray set last year, even though I had the old box sets. The improvements are outstanding. Pete dying will finish those off, if they are not gone already.
Pete had his place in the group. The runt of the litter, but loved all the same. Sleep well dear brother.

Ira Gitler, one of the great jazz critics and producers of the 50s, died at age 90. Among the artists he championed and produced: Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, and the Modern Jazz Quartet.

R.I.P. Doug Sandom, who passed away at age 89. Doug was the drummer for The Who before Keith Moon. I didn't know there was a Who drummer before Keith Moon.

Saw a mention from Dirk in the shout box,..sad about Eddie Money dying and now Ric Ocasek. I have cd's by both of them. So many people in my collection are now dead it's alarming. Eddie's Take Me Home Tonight has to be about the best song that borrowed from another classic, Be My Baby featuring Ronnie herself, and turning it into it's own worthy hit record.
Ric in particular...the Cars...Wow. The string of timeless hits they had in the late 70's early 80's is really something. Even though it was Ben on lead (also gone a long time now) songs like Just What I Needed and Let's Go are absolute perfection. I challenge anyone in a blah mood to listen to either of those songs and not suddenly feel good if not great. Ric and the Cars really knew how to craft a memorable song. New Wave at it's best. Never saw them live and didn't pay attention (regrettably) in their heyday but man they were really good. Thanks Ric.

I liked the Cars straight away. One of my favorite New Wave (for lack of a better term) bands that hit, as the 70s were coming to a close. I also found the Rubinoos around that time, as well. That was great time for rock music. RIP Eddie and Ric.

If someone asked me to describe a perfect rock band/song I'd point them to this video.

Hopefully, Ginger Baker really does Rest In Peace. Sounds like he has been fighting demons, drugs and Jack Bruce (also RIP) for a long, long time. I loved his drumming style. He was the best drummer of his era.

Great musician! Sorry to see him pass. I was fortunate to have seen Cream in Sacramento in March of 1968. QDEP, Ginger Baker.

The great Sir Ron Nasty MBE (returned to Her Majesty in 1969) has passed suddenly at the age of 75.
Neil's infectious and playful tunes were always just this side of a High Court appearance for plagiarism. One of the most supremely talented musicians and comedians to ever take the piss and get away with it.

He took a piss and got away with it? Where, in public? Did anybody see him? Lucky he didn't get arrested.....

The great John Prine has died. I had read earlier in the week that he was sick with this horrible virus.
Now he is gone. rest in peace, brother. He leaves us with a wealth of music to remember him by.

This may have been his last performance looking at his last shows.
