So, personally speaking I've been so deep in the BB psychodrama for so long that I've not seen daylight for decades... yet it almost always comes as a huge surprise to me that there are fans of other bands who are as consumed with the minutae of their chosen artist as we are. Granted I don't expect Katy Perry fans to be so inclined (or are they ?) but it's a worrying thought that, somewhere out there, there's my equivalent of, say, a Simon & Garfunkel or a Stevie Wonder fan. They're probably a nicer person, mind. The sole exception to my continual astonishment is, of course, The Beatles. I've dipped a toe on their forums and jeeze, there are fans there who make the worst BB f*ckwit or sh*tweasel look like a prime Papal candidate.

I know that many Van Halen fans seemingly feel that that absolutely have to decide on the only version of the band they're allowed to listen to (usually David Lee Roth, with a lot of unnecessary hate for Sammy Hagar).
Not really a specific band, but I've noticed on various sites I follow that heavy metal fans in general are some of the most elitist music fans on the webs. If they don't like a particular band/artist, the go-to insult is "they're not metal" or "they're a pop band." Or, the old "(band X) has been shit since (third or fourth album)."
Sometimes I wonder if fans actually derive any joy from the music of which they claim to be fans.

I remember suggesting on another BB forum (with tongue firmly in cheek) that The Beatles broke up because they lacked stamina. Someone with a Beatles song title as their handle strode in and gave me a long and slightly aggressive lecture. I got the impression that had we been in the same room together they would have hit me. Years ago I was in a record shop that sold vinyl and the occasional rare-ish book and informal CD. While I helped myself to BB goodies, the proprietor explained that BB fans had a reputation for being opinionated and making sure you knew about it but that the absolute worst offenders in his experience were fans of Bob Dylan!

Dylan. Of course - the Dylanologists.

There is a certain fan of The Who that is a weird sort of combination of c-man, Ian, Jon Stebbins, Howie Edelsen(apologies if I've misspelled it), and Andrew Doe combined. He claims to have the largest Who collection in the world(and I don't doubt him). He's selling his collection on his website* and his asking price is $5,000,000.
*Don't worry, he has multiple doubles of everything.

There's a neat thread on Hoffman about ELO's secret messages. There would seem to be many 'fans' who don't like the guy who sings, arranges, produces; those who think without Bev Bevan the band's no good; still some who harp on about Roy Wood taking them in a more progressive direction (See My Baby Jive? Angel Fingers?). I mean, I like Uncle Roy and he's hugely underrated, but come on...

I don't expect Katy Perry fans to be so inclined (or are they ?) I did a quick internet search and it appears there are a group known as "Katy Cats". I am personally glad there is no such horrendous nickname for beach boys fans.

One word: Weezer.
I've never seen another fanbase who seem to so actively hate the principle songwriter/leader of the group they profess to be fans of. It's even worse than the ceaseless Mike Love-bashing found elsewhere on the internet. Bizarre stuff to be sure.

There are, however, Brianistas... Good point, that might be on par with Katy Cats. The Katy Cats are probably more mature.
