I got into the Beach Boys in '68 (aged 8) through an older friend who lived next door to a 15 year old fan who introduced him to the band, and it filtered down to me.
The first album I bought was Best of...Vol 3 (the UK track listing is strong to this day) and from Sunflower onwards, bought all the album's on their release (excluding ' Summer in Paradise !), and obtained the back catalogue, although I have to admit, the very early albums aren't really my thing.
My favourite era ? Although I love the 66-67 period as much as anything, I got into that retrospectively so really, the Sunflower through to Holland era is 'my' Beach Boys, the one I grew up with, although I have a soft spot for '15 Big Ones' (as it was around then my interest in the Brian Wilson story intensified) and a huge soft spot for 'Love You'.
In the era of Glam Rock in the UK in the early seventies, although being a big Bowie fan, my other main listening interests weren't that of the average 12-13 year old school kid...70's Beach Boys and (Gabriel era) Genesis !
So it was during the mid 70's 'Brian's Back campaign that my interest moved to another level, reading whatever I could, and obtaining cassettes and records of a 'dubious origin' , and this interest in the band (specifically Brian & Dennis) has continued to this day.
As for seeing them live, I didn't get to see them for the first time until 2 shows at the Wembley Arena in 1980.
I missed out seeing them in '75, due to not having had the cash to accompany my brother to the Elton John/Beach Boys gig at Wembley Stadium, and I did finally get tickets in '77, only to have it cancelled due to them playing the CBS convention I believe.
I saw Brian many times in London from his first live dates through to 'That Lucky Old Sun'.
I did see a couple of early 'Greatest Hits' show, but as much as I love the man, personally it started to sadden me a little as I didn't want to see the great man just churning out the hits in a state of gradually declining health, therefore I haven't seen him live for a few years now.
I am a huge music geek, listening to,and reading about, all sorts of bands and musicians, but The Beach Boys are the ones that are my 'home', their music feels part of me.
I had toyed with the idea of joining the forum previously, and now the whole 'Feel Flows Box Set' saga has got my enthusiasm running to 'max' again, so thank you for accepting me.
