Just learned of his passing... read an obituary... and went right off him. NRA supporter, so beneath my contempt.

He was quite the liberal in the 70s. He then did a complete 180. But for me, it's more about the music. He had an insane amount of talent & did a lot of session work in the early 70s. Dylan & Ringo among his credits.

Yeah, he went from being a long haired country boy who got high in the morning and drunk in the afternoon to writing these lyrics: "I tell you what i'd do with all those guys selling dope, i'd take a big tall tree and a short piece of rope". And his first hit, Uneasy Rider, sure was not the ramblings of a Bible toting' conservative.
