Hi all,
Since this is the end of 2018 the song for this week will be Auld Lang Syne. It is good advice. Keep the good times close to you.

Dennis' message makes it personal and sounds unscripted, even if he was reading the message, and especially where he seems to miss or halt over a word. Humanizes the sex symbol of the band. It makes him sound like a choir boy.

Well, I'd argue that New Year's is part of the 12 Days of Christmas.

Well - I'm not a purist. I like, love, really, the live stuff and the sessions tracks - and all the chatter. You can make something studio perfect - but behind the perfection, there are edits and whatnot. Brian's finale with this season's live show was great to include that - it was not an after-thought, I don't think, either, on the album. It was speaking to the fans. I find it charming to speak directly to them.

"Auld Lang Syne" - a slightly strange song for a Christmas album, especially one for a young rock & roll band. Even stranger was Brian Wilson - widely known as a perfectionist in the studio - leaving Dennis' flub on record. You can rationalize it any way you want...but Dennis should've done another take. "Auld Lang Syne" does not rank very highly on my favorite Beach Boys' song list.

And the band was from a pretty much working class background. All of that looks very conservative by today's standards. The flub could be analogized to Soulful Old Man Shunshine on EH. Flubs are sometimes part of the charm.

Flubs are sometimes part of the charm. I have read people post/comment about Carl's flub on "Soulful Old Man Sunshine", and honestly, if it wasn't pointed out to me I never would've noticed it. I still don't put much credence into the flub being the reason for the song not being released in Carl's lifetime or whatever.
I'll repeat again that I will never realize or rationalize - or admit - that Dennis' flub on "Auld Lang Syne" adds charm or realness or the human element. It bothers me and distracts me every time I hear it. The only version I listen to now is the corrected version (by Dudders, I believe).

I really love Auld Lang Syne as a song - it may be my favorite traditional.
Among BB related versions, I rate the original BB version higher than BW one, as the former is less arranged vocally and sounds better to my ears overall.
