Just noticed Dutch music mag OOR will be publishing an extract from "The Beach Boys in Holland" in their new issue (which has U2's The Edge on the cover).
Will definitely be getting the book when it comes out. Well done to all involved 👍.

Ah, yes, I knew that was indeed in the planning stage. Thanks for mentioning it.
Just curious: did you know about the book presentation on March 31st.
One has to make a reservation. but entrance is free. And I just checked, and there's still room for more guests.

Not directly Baambrugge-related. But a tad interesting anyway. A Dutch interview with Mike from late 1978.

Interesting…seems like Bruce was the only one to really be behind trying disco with Here Comes the Night later that year…or at least later they all blamed it on him! Mike certainly doesn’t seem to be a disco fan!! Also…he kind of goes along with the interviewers attack on MIU but at the end tells him to give it another spin. I know Al and Ron Altbach spearheaded that record but Mike was also very involved….seems like he was already disowning it

Arrived today! Impressed by the look and layout of the book, great photos. Will take it with me on holiday next week, that is if I haven't finished it already by then. Hope the official presentation today went well. I'm sure any photos of the event will be shared here in due course 😊

Took a bit longer to respond. But here we go. Last Friday (March 31st) the official book presentation of The Beach Boys In Holland took place at bookstore Donner in the center of Rotterdam. Mind you, not just a bookstore. The call themselves "a reader's pleasure ground". And it is. There's a diner, a (Velvet) music store, a classic music store including sheet music, an antiquarian bookshop. And a programming of book presentations, lectures, debates, musical performances, and exhibitions. It was also a rainy day, which fortunately didn't lead to any accidents. A chair leg would though... First downer of the day was my father calling off because of flu, which meant a was accompanied with a friend of mine who I picked up along the ride. All went well including the last part of the trip with the subway (parking the car in on of the outskirts of the town). O, and I almost forgot to mentionthat another friend and collector - cleaning up his collection a bit - gave me a huge present; a box filled with fanzines from all over the world, articles, magazines, you name it. That will suck up my time the coming weeks if not months. So we arrived at the bookstore. No problems getting in (we were honoured guests anyway) and getting on the right floor or in the presentation room. But my friend was unfortunate enough to stumble over one of the chairlegs and make a nasty fall. And the injury indeed seemed serious. ERO's took a look, actually advised calling an ambulance, but as he refused to leave the room - this was the event he had been looking out for for 9 months - it was decided he took the seat and let the preceedings begin (with at least 10 pair of caring eyes watching him). So the event started. Despite all the hassle at the start I did have a look around seeing quite a few familiar faces. And there were more honoured guests, a then-neighbor of Carl & Annie (Van Vlaanderen), and mrs. Willard - Don Willards wife - was there as well. After a warm welcome from the publisher, the event started with music provided by yorick van Norden who did splendid solo renditions of Only With You, Leaving This Town and Sail On Sailor. Mind you - on his birthday and with other concert obligations later on the day, so he had to leave quickly after that. Then the authors Peter Tetteroo and John Swildens took the stage. As the original plan with an interviewer were thwarted (another case of flu), they started a fun little conversation with each other on the making of the book. After that it was lucky me to have a brief moment of exposure, as Peter and John had decided to give my the first copy of the book and give me a brief moment explaining my role (that is; after I had to confess how many copies of Holland I have in my collection). When I asked them if I was their guy behind the scenes, or their fly in the ointment, I was told (with a laugh) that they sometimes cursed me when I delivered another huge pile of comments of new information, but that it was all received with gratitude. Or more seriously tone: I was their historical conscience. I can live with that. After all, I tend to believe I'm knowledgable on this subject, but writing a book is a someting totally different. And Peter & John know how to write a book that is not only interesting for die-hards like me (us), but is also appealing for a general audience. In which they definitely succeeded. When that was done, the activities moved to the adjacent cafe and lunch room where the signing took place. I stayed behind at first though, as the ERO's emerged again advising my friend it might perhaps be better to call an ambulance. And when they arrived it was clear that my friend indeed had to be brought to the hospital. Which was the biggest downer of the day for sure. After giving the paramedics my info, I did some small talk with the publisher and co-owner of the bookstore, who also urged me to keep me posted on my friend's well-being. Then of to the cafe where I was able to talk a bit with some friends, get my obligatory autographs (and for my friend of course). got a few compliments myself, which was flattering. On advice and in the good company of good friend jk and his wife we then went to the nearby Maher's Kitchen in concert and congress hall De Doelen, where each Friday one can enjoy a terrific Syrian buffet for an equal terrific price. Always good to talk with friends about other things than just the Beach Boys. Highly recommended (both the buffet and the company of jk & co ). I did have to decline on the cultural program that followed; a reading on Gerswin's Summertime, which I'm sure I (and my friend) would have enjoyed. But I preferred to check on my friend's well-being. So I visited him at the nearby hospital. Which was good, but he definitely had to stay there for a while, surgery already being planned for the following day. Be reassuered, it went successfully; I was there last Sunday, and things were going better already, although it will take a while to heal. Despite this damper, overall it was a fantastic afternoon; a unique achievement which I hadn't expected to see it happen 3 years ago. For those who happen to be there: on Saturday April 22nd they will repeat this presentation at the Mega Record & CD Fair in the Brabanthallen in Den Bosch, The Netherlands (12.45-13.30h, stall nr. 382).

Ha, Klaas Jelle. Thank you for your exhaustive account of the afternoon/evening. (And for your kind words. ) There's not too much I can add to it! It was most convivial to meet up with you again and chew the fat. Great shame about your dad, and your friend. Talk about bad luck. But Yorick was amazing (what a character!) and the authors were enthusiastic. And, of course, Maher's Kitchen topped it all off very nicely! Pity you had to miss the "Summertime" event -- it was very relaxed and full of dry humour, and laced with some most interesting versions! The book itself is a terrific read so far and a fascinating journey through Holland, both the album and the Dutch province of Noord-Holland, where the studio and all the temporary residences of the Boys and their entourage were located. Please note: Holland and the Netherlands are not the same thing. Holland in fact comprises just two of the 12 Dutch provinces, Noord(=North)-Holland (where it all happened) and Zuid(=South)-Holland, of which Rotterdam is the largest city. Admittedly, "Holland" trips off the tongue more easily than the lumpy "the Netherlands", which makes it a better brand name for the country as a whole, but it's a misnomer. Anyway... Good luck, KJ, in Den Bosch on the 22nd.

Friends, where is Groninger in relation to the north province of Holland and where the Beach Boys were and where you are dear friends from the Netherlands are situated? There's a few Dutch fans overhere. Not sure where they all live. Depending on where your are in the province of (Northern) Holland it's a 1½ to 2 hours drive to the city of Groningen. I currently live in the province of Utrecht, but I grew up near Groningen. For further questions send me a PM.

The Beach Boys in Holland, phase 2:
Now that the Dutch publication is out (and selling fairly well !), now time has come to explore the possibilities for an English version. Anyone out here know of a publisher (UK, US, Canadian, Australian, etc) that would be interested in releasing a book like this one? Any help/advise is welcomed!

Another idea would be to publish it the way Stephen JMc Parland does with all his books now...in PDF files. So you have only to translate it.😉

Anyone out here know of a publisher (UK, US, Canadian, Australian, etc) that would be interested in releasing a book like this one? Any help/advise is welcomed! Glad to hear. It's a fabulous and well-written book that deserves and would definitely appeal to a much wider audience. To be honest, I think an English version would do even better, obviously the Dutch language market is a limited one, but there's a lot of fans out there that would love to buy this if it were available. Perhaps board member Malc has some advice on how best to tackle this?
