By the way, for those who have the book, notice one album that does not get highlighted? Every other album through 1980 gets a nice display with album art, track listings and recording dates. The omission is really glaring considering this is a book produced in the UK. The album?

If whoever sourced the Grossman production "credit" had bothered to click on the citation link on Wikipedia, they'd have seen that yes, he produced The Beach Boys In Concert - a 1980 HBO TV special of that summers July 4th Washington Mall show. He also produced the following years 20th anniversary special. That's sloppy, sloppy research. Don't get me wrong, the book overall is superb... but given the easy access to people who could have spent a day (if that) checking this sort of thing, well, it's disappointing. And again, Joe Q. Public won't notice, or particularly care if they do.

So TIL that "Surfers Rule" was originally called "Surfer Girl" with a completely new set of lyrics.

Kids these days, with abbreviated texting on their phones, eh?

I'm sure Dennis thought up that title.

Especially because the concerts that made it up were from 1968. It didn't come out in the US until around 1976. They SO could have used a live album in the Summer of 1969. Wasn't there talk that they owed Capitol another album? With rarer stuff like Wake the World and Aren't You Glad? I loved the CD when it was re-released.

In the 1970's, the original "Live In London" LP was a hard record to find in the U.S. Couldn't even find it at Tower Records, Rasputin's, or Leopolds in the Bay Area, where they stocked import albums. This was before Amoeba Records and the Internet - maybe '74 or '75. I don't even remember it being in 'Goldmine' or 'Discoveries'. It was released in 1970 & 1971 with three or four cover variations; the gatefold cover being the most prevalent. Anyway, my record collector friend Tim and I drove down to L.A. and 'Live In London' was at the top of both of our want lists at the time. We went to all the record shops looking for it. Finally, he got tired of driving, so I took over. We pulled up to Peaches Records, the last stop for the day, and while I looked for a place to park, Tim got out and made a beeline for the front door. He went inside ahead of me and headed right for the "B" record section. There it was - 'Live In London' with the gatefold sleeve! I was pissed that he'd scored it first! And now with Ebay and the Internet, they're everywhere now.

Notice my previous post with the album cover with Blondie there. You know, Fille, we used to play the LP and the 8-track in the car, and this album had the cleanest, clearest, loudest sound of any live LP, including the '73 "In Concert" album and 'Lei'd In Hawaii'. Far and away the best sounding live album, and I think it was Desper who did a helluva job recording those December '68 London Palladium dates.

Well worth the price. I would like to have had the original one with the sleeve but couldn't swing it at the time. And as soon as I turned around to consider buying it again, all 415 deluxe copies had sold out! So the 'peasants version' is definitely worth 50 bucks I think.

Proof positive that AI image generation was around in Singapore/Malaysia/Hong Kong in 1970. The back cover (on Discogs) has sleeve design by Freddy Ang - probably the programmer for DeepAI version 0.000000001.

I'm so conflicted about this book - still haven't gotten over the Sail On Sailor episode. Loved the 'Feel Flows' music (still playing my own 2CD comp on loop in the car) but thought the liners and info was sub par, couldn't wait for SOS but bailed as soon as I saw the price and the lack of meat, and it seems I've quickly gone from BBs "take my money" customer to sceptical "maybe not" guy. Particularly given the book stops half way through the story. I think I'll inevitably pick up the paperback sometime, but this new arrangement, this Howie chap (about whom I know nothing but whose name seems to be attached to these less than perfect products), it doesn't really have my confidence so far. I'd like as much BB music as poss, with detailed info about the making of the music and as much reliable commentary from the BBs themselves, nicely done and affordably presented, but the over-presentation and lack of attention to detail are real turn offs for me. Not that anybody asked.

Also, the book title has also been already done, a little research should have told them to use something more 'innovative' and different.

Also, the book title has also been already done, a little research should have told them to use something more 'innovative' and different. Get the point on the name. 100%. But, on the quotes thing, Dennis and Carl are not coming back with things to say. And for the rest, those are pretty good comments so maybe the title is a copy, but some of the quotes are worth the repetition for a newer or enlarged audience. I'm not offended by the title duplication for now but in the future they should steer clear or at least research the prior done work. That is just common sense.

I just finished the whole thing, and.....I don't know. I just ...don't know. Fun to see pictures and images that hadn't been published before. Nice to hear the polite, gloves off compliments between the band members. Nice to hear the usual loving quotes from other musicians.
But the whole thing just felt TOO polite to me, and without any context, the comments on each era of the recordings just seemed so bland to me. Nothing about Murry getting canned? Manson?
While there were SOME nods to the tough times (circa 1977, etc) or Brian "getting back on his feet" it was all AFTER whatever issues that had happened, and not really brought out. At least "15 Big Ones" and "Love You" was presented from different viewpoints. The issue of oldies vs newer material was at least discussed.
The licensing issues, 2012 reunion, TWGMTR, and subsequent issues, would have added some spice to all that sugar....
Again, overall nice, but that's a lot of sugar......

It's a great read of 'quotes'. Some pretty strange comments from the guys at times, some not so nice towards fellow members, but it's a different way of presenting material. I much rather this than a sugar coated version written by others who have had nothing or very little to do with the band.
