What I am thinking is that some either copied bootlegs on to tape, or more likely, some of the people who traded tapes back in the day did trade reel to reels, or transfered cassettes to reels.
A lot of people didn't know that the best way to record something without losing quality was to use VHS HIFI that recorded sound digitally. It was a cheap alternative to DAT.

Aye, the Michigan tapes were officially released as a CopEx download a while back… it'd be an interesting way to store them, for sure!

The labels on those reels aren’t in the late Bob Hanes’ handwriting, but before the days of CD burners, when Bob got a new cassette of an unreleased track, he would immediately transfer it to reel-to-reel, and make copies from there. It would avoid repetitive wear-and-tear on his source cassette, and reel-to-reel’s improved signal-to-noise ratio over cassette meant cleaner transfers, even if they were one further generation down.

Description: Two Scotch brand 7" reel to reel tapes sold as blank for re-use (in different branded boxes). Currently has live Beach Boys content. Please see all photos for more information. Please see my other listings for more reel to reel and DAT tapes. I do combine shipping on multiple items. Thank you. I can bulk erase the content on these if requested.
Sounds to me like a home-job project. Just like all the others.
