Heard this only a little bit ago. Very sad right now. Most important (and one of the last surviving) member of the GREATEST white girl group of all-time. To me, this is the first significant death of a 60s music legend in 2024. Not a good omen. Offhand, I'm not certain if the Shangri-Las ever opened for the BB, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that they did, and probably more than once. Listen to "Train From Kansas City" and "Out In The Streets", both from 1965, if you want to hear IMO the two finest Shangri-Las songs, with Mary, only SIXTEEN at the time(!), turning in typically incredible lead vocal work. The woman may be gone, but her contribution to American rock and roll will live forever.

More later, but man, it's a sad day for music. Here are Mary, Betty and the Twins giving it their all:

The Shangri-Las and Beach Boys did share the stage, maybe only once or twice but it’s documented (either in Ohio or Georgia maybe rings a bell?) and Mary mentioned going to dinner with some of The Beach Boys in an interview I read at some point.
It’s weird when someone you never met that has/had no idea you exist dies and it makes you sad, but I’m feeling like you guys. Mary Weiss could’ve, should’ve, would’ve, been a household name but the gals career was grossly mismanaged… like Ronnie Spector.

Once again, www.bellagio10452.com/gigs.html has the answers. If I've read it right, they shared a stage four times, twice in 1964 (27 and 28 November in Cleveland and Detroit respectively) and twice in 1965 (24 July in Jacksonville and 26 August in Louisville).

Looking for a BB connection from the times they toured together, I could only find this: "Though she won't name names, [Mary] Weiss admits that guys in bands tried hitting on the Shangri-Las, but to no avail. ' We went to dinner with a few of the Beach Boys and hung out with the Zombies in England and New York, but did not date any of them'." [ Source] "In 2005, [Mary] Weiss left her job in commercial interiors to return to music. She was persuaded to record a solo album, Dangerous Game, in 2007, despite having not sung in almost 20 years. She recalled, 'I didn't even sing along to the car radio.' In March 2007, Norton Records released Dangerous Game, a critically acclaimed album on which she was backed by The Reigning Sound." [ Source] From that album, this is "I Just Missed You", which seems to be picking up the thread where "Remember" left off more than four decades earlier: www.discogs.com/de/sell/item/2901207520

Saw this in a display, at a local music centre, of LPs that feature the New York skyline on their covers. After showing just three of the girls on the cover, it erroneously credits the missing fourth girl, Betty Weiss, with lead vocals and misspells Mary Ann as Mary Anne. And why no "The"? (I see now it was printed in the Netherlands.) R.I.P. the Ganser twins, R.I.P. Mary Weiss. www.discogs.com/master/1383370-Shangri-Las-Young-Girls-In-The-Big-City-All-The-Hits
