Migrating a board with that large volume of posts on it to new board software would likely require considerable time and effort, I suspect.

When I log into Smileysmile.net, Bitdefender warns me that the site contains unsafe URLs. That site is not secure—no lock icon next to the URL—and thus is more susceptible to hackers. Of course, I have no idea what's really happening with the site.

Yeah I think hackers have bigger fish to fry than attacking a dwindling message board concerning a 60+ year old band. Might not hurt to start archiving any old threads from there you want to hold on to though.

It's been that way with a pop-up saying it isn't a secure site, at least on my devices. Forever.

I’m sure if you audit either his or AGD’ s bank records you will find large amounts transferred during said periods of board down. (I couldn’t resist)

There was a notice posted before the Smiley board went down that server maintenance was scheduled and that it will be back up soon.

I posted elsewhere about this, found this thread belatedly, deleted and reposting here:
******
Went to Smiley Smile today to check on something or other and, though we all know it has a tendency to disappear from time to time, this time landed on an ominous placeholder webpage rather than the usual DNS error.
Went to whois.com and it indicated an update to the domain name as of yesterday, which could indicate a change of ownership information.
Anyone have any further info? As AGD and others have said, despite the checkered history between boards, it's always good to have more Beach Boys boards than less. OTOH, with the upcoming Disney+ doc, there could be some acquisition going on. (Rank speculation)
*******
If they said there was server maintenance going on, that's probably all it is, but given the above this seems a bit different from prior disappearances of SS.

Can't see anyone wanting to acquire SS as it stands.

Can't see anyone wanting to acquire SS as it stands. Of course anyone acquiring the domain name wouldn't be acquiring or even desiring the message board. They'd likely use the address for other reasons. Same placeholder landing page is still there.

Again, I hope the content we all helped create over the decades (even though outdated and mostly wrong these days) is preserved under whatever old/new owner/moderation/OS etc..

They'd likely use the address for other reasons. Same placeholder landing page is still there. Fact is, as Chuckie admitted last time, the board OS is hideously outdated (by decades, according to those who Know About These Things) and prone to these frequent outages. The implication that he can't be bothered to do anything about it is, of course, inescapable. The last time this happened, like many others here I hoped the considerable trove of info and scholarship accumulated down the years wasn't lost forever... and the response from the usual suspects was, well, as expected. I'd never wish any BB site out of existence (bar a few FB pages which are, frankly, close to actionable) but... wouldn't it be nice if SS returned purged of the toxic element? Then people might actually start posting there again.

the board OS is hideously outdated (by decades, according to those who Know About These Things) yeah, those who know about these things… Or literally anyone who visits the website in the year 2024.

It is back, which whatever the board's flaws might be, is a good thing.
