Note to the mods: might not hurt to put up a sub-board for the live albums that you could move this thread to.
With its 10-year anniversary release looming in a week or two, I thought we could touch upon the infamous live CD released from the band's mostly legendary and high profile 50th anniversary reunion tour.
Let's just get this out of the way: the mix and editing on this album are utterly bonkers. With blatant use of some obvious pitch correction and some particularly strange editing tricks that suggest it's debatable on exactly how "live" these performances on this CD actually were, I can totally understand why so many fans hold such a high distaste for this one. And as someone with a background education in audio recording and mixing, these idiosyncrasies can get under my skin sometimes as well.
However despite all of this I have to make a confession: I still actually have had a lot of fun with this one. Maybe it's the fact that 2012 was just an exciting time to be a Beach Boys fan. Or that I really loved the reunion album followed by an emotional and mostly successful tour (well at least up until the end anyway). But the wonky audio mix never really detracted too much enjoyment out of me as it normally would.
Although there are definitely some noteworthy songs missing here (including Foskett's performance of "Don't Worry Baby" among other things) you still get a pretty solid track list that covers most of the shows from this tour.
I would love to see a new and more complete concert Blu-ray come out with an expanded song list. There were a number of great performances near the end of the tour including rare performances of songs such as "Let Him Run Wild" that I would be thrilled to have an official release of.

I canโt believe itโs been almost 11 years since my brother and I drove up to Berkeley, California to see The Beach Boys reunion at the Greek Theater on June 1, 2012. Where on earth did the time go? When I want to relive this moment, I watch a bootleg DVD of a Japanese concert of this tour, and I ignore all the official product that came out regarding it. How did they do such a poor job of documenting it, when bootleggers get it right?

It did not do their performances justice.

Bought it on the day of release, ten years ago. Still haven't made it through disc one. My ears tell me it was recorded on three tracks:
1 - lead vocal 2 - crowd noise 3 - everythng else.
Absolute, unremitting, incontestable crap. I mentioned how utterly awful it sounded to someone intimately involved, and they said they'd not heard it yet, but they'd chase up a copy. Maybe five hours later they got back to me and apologised for how bad it was.

Sorry guys but I've heard worse-sounding live albums. Check out Paul McCartney's 2009 live release ๐บ๐๐๐ ๐ธ๐ฃ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ค ๐๐๐๐ ๐ถ๐๐ก๐ฆ. A muted, muffled mess that barely passes as a suitable stereo mix. And the autotune on that one is possibly even more obnoxious.
And then you've got that dreadful-sounding box set of live material by the band Chicago covering most of their career that came out 5-10 years ago. That one's all over the place but the audio is consistently lousy. Some of the tracks off of it (especially the older performances) sound like audience recordings...really *bad* ones. Any Chicago product in the last 15 years handled by Tim Jessup should be avoided like the plague as this guy does not know how to mix to save his life. He impressively butchered the band's 50th anniversary release of their debut album so egregiously that Rhino had to recall the damn thing for a replacement disc that was allegedly improved in sound quality (SPOILERS: it wasn't).
So perhaps I've just built a tolerance to piss-poor sounding live albums but I still don't have any major problems with this one from the Beach Boys.

It's the 'stinker' of all 'stinkers' and an embarrassment upon the group. This is 'the best' they could come up with from all of the performances? This is a salvaged mess! 'Robo' Mike and Brian, Yikes!
The sad part is, among the 2 CD's, there are some neat performances, but the bad one's are so bad, they just over shine the others. 'All This Is That', 'Marcella', 'In My Room', 'California Saga' are not too bad, but lost in the scheme of things. Still apart from that, I rather enjoy hearing Dennis' vocal 'Forever' and Carl's vocal on 'GOK', so it's still an instant purchase just for those. That brings it up a few notches... 4/10.
What would have been epic and another lost opportunity, would have been to do a DVD counterpart of it. Oh that's right! They did, the butchered and paralleled disaster 'live in concert' with 21 songs and the rotten amateurish sound and video editing.
I love this group....

Wasn't there a decent Japanese radio show boot that was better than this?

Wasn't there a decent Japanese radio show boot that was better than this? I think so. Perhaps some day we'll get a better-sounding and more complete live album from this tour.
