My name is Les; I've lurked here for a long time and just realized I actually registered in 2019 but I don't know if I ever introduced myself. I am/was Les P on the Smiley Smile board, the Smile Shop, and probably on a few other extinct BB boards like BBB and Cabinessence, and I am Smiler on the Steve Hoffman Music Forum.
I grew up in Houston hearing the BB 60s hits in real time on AM radio but didn't buy their records. I was a bit of a snob toward the Beach Boys in the early 70s when my high school friends were into the surf and car hits, but in 1976 I discovered Pet Sounds and then obsessively immersed myself into all things Beach Boys and Brian Wilson, especially Smile, and haven't emerged yet. The peak of my Beach Boys fandom and one of the highlights of my life was my wife and I attending the Smile premiere in London in 2004. It was a won-won-wonderful lovefest, meeting BB fans from all over the world (the good John Manning and The Sauce among them), and the concert itself was transcendent and mind-blowing. Getting my ticket signed by Brian and Van Dyke was the icing on the birthday cake.
My favorite era is 1966-71, my favorite song of all time is "Surf's Up," and my top bands are Beach Boys, Beatles, The Who and The Kinks (yes, I seem to be stuck in the 60s & 70s). I'm an amateur composer/musician and some of my music is strongly influenced by Brian Wilson. I enjoy the discourse, info, and insight here and it's nice to recognize a number of you from other boards. Thanks for hosting this groovy scene...sail on!
