Much of this has been explained piecemeal across the forum by me or others. However, it would be handy if all such information were in one place. Please feel free to add stuff and/or point out anything that's poorly explained -- or undiluted gibberish -- and I'll deal with it. Some of this might seem simplistic but I've seen everything here cause problems in the past. Editing and deleting postsIt doesn't seem to be common knowledge that you can always edit a post. The one caveat is that once half an hour has passed since originally posting, you'll get an unsightly message at bottom right... as you can see here. * So if you're editing grammar, correcting typos and/or adding information, you would do well to do so within 30 minutes. The big advantage of being able to edit a post until eternity is that you can, for example, delete or replace embedded videos that have been removed. As for deleting entire posts, click on the "cogwheel" at far right and scroll down. You can also use this feature if you wish to revise a post on the strength of new information received. Save the post in question to your PC/tablet/whatever, delete that post here and repost it in the form you'd prefer. Needless to say, the ability to edit and delete posts can be abused, like anything else. PollsYou can only organize a poll in the opening post of a thread. If you forget, save that poll-less opening post to your hard disk, delete the topic and begin again before others join in. If they do, it becomes a job for the mods that could have been avoided. Uploading images If the image is on your hard disk, drag it to the Desktop (or anywhere else you consider convenient). Then go online to "postimages.org". Click on "Do not resize my image" and scroll down to "640x480 (for message boards)". Then go to "Choose image", go to Desktop, click on that image and then "Choose". It will upload in seconds. This gives you a "direct link", which is what you need for posting, so copy that. Click on the image logo, the little square with a landscape on it at top right (you'll see it when you're creating or editing a post), and paste the direct link into it, making sure the "http://" bit isn't double. If you're looking to embed an image that's already online, this example may help. Say you want a picture of a particular 45 by The Euclid Beach Band. Google the string "there's no surf in cleveland" and then go to <images>. Click on an image of the 45 (in this case "45cat"), which duplicates it in its own box on the right, where you right-click the option "Open Image in New Tab". Then copy and paste the new tab's URL (in this case images.45cat.com/euclid-beach-band-theres-no-surf-in-cleveland-1978-12.jpg) into your reply post; you do this by clicking on the image logo (see previous paragraph) and pasting the image's URL into it. You can also try dragging the image into the post -- sometimes it's the only way to get an image of, say, an album cover up to a size where you can read the information. So there's that option too. ShoutsYou can always edit a shout. Move the cursor onto your shout and "Edit" will appear at the right. (Click on the X to delete a shout). To be continued, no doubt. * Of course, you can always make light of that "edit" message by adding a comment, as here.

Using the Shoutbox on your smartphone Go to the front page of EH (and/or BBT) and scroll all the way down. At bottom right you'll see the word "Desktop". Click on it and it will give you the format you'd get on your PC or laptop, including the Shoutbox. You can then shout as you would on a computer. This works for me on my iPhone, so it should work for you too.

The Shoutbox won't appear on mobile view, users would have to switch to the Desktop view (which is a button in the lower right corner on mobile view) to see the Shoutbox on mobile.
Sorry to say the function is limited. On the mobile version there's a button at the bottom right of the forum that says "Desktop". It may be partially obscured by the phone if you have a newer model as this was designed quite some time ago. If you tap this, you'll load the forum as if you were on a desktop PC and will be able to use the Shoutbox. The usability of the desktop version on the phone will likely be rather buggy; if you don't have a theme specifically designed to accommodate for phones, but it's usable.

Thanks. I've only used the "Add Attachment" button for pictures, and they just show up as thumbnails in the post, so you have to click on them to see them full sized. I like how most people get the full sized picture in the post.

If a post (or a PM) is proving troublesome to organize (e.g., there's too much redundant space or you're having trouble quoting someone), you can do no better than click on BBCode and sort it out there, checking at Preview as you go. This may seem obvious to some but I spent weeks, maybe months, communicating with a friend in ridiculously oversized PMs before a kind poster pointed me at BBCode! Thinks: Would that be Beach Boys Code?

Thanks for all these great tips, jk. Don't forget, fellow posters, if you have any other technical queries, just post in the ask the moderators section, we're here to help! Admin and Mods also have access to heavy technical documentation via our forum hosts (ProBoards, they are generous dudes).

BBCode tags are what give words bold, italics, underline, and many other "styles". BBCode also allows you to make links and generally beautify your text in a post." So, there you have it, BBcode's they way to keep things pretty around here, folks.

So, there you have it, BBcode's they way to keep things pretty around here, folks. Thank you for your kind words, A. On the subject of BBCode, if you want to retract a post to edit and repost it, maybe elsewhere on the forum, go to BBCode and back up the post to your PC in that format with all the appropriate codes built in. It could save you a lot of work! (I discovered that when I moved my "Lonely Days" transcription, which is bristling with accentuations in bold type.) There's one more thing: I've noticed posters quoting another's post occasionally get their response caught up in the quote box, as if it's part of the quote. BBCode can help you there too. It can also help you quote from another post in sections, or even one sentence at a time, by using [ quote ][ /quote ] * for each quoted passage. * Without the spacing, which is for demonstration purposes only

Links to posts/threads at Smiley This may seem obvious but here 'tis anyway. You can't activate a link to Smiley directly (or at least I can't), presumably due to the comma in the URL. So you copy and paste it into a new window and hey presto.

The following information is not unimportant, particularly for newbies. It may also encourage outsiders to become members.
These four areas are only available to those who are logged in:
- Stephen W Desper Study Videos (a must-visit) and the related discussion threads - Memorabilia (discuss and add scans of your collection) - Reference Materials (Concert Reviews; Bootlegs; Magazine Articles; Members' Writings) - The Trade Store (should speak for itself)

This is more of a New Year's "extra" than anything else but it might be of interest to someone… The on-forum Signature feature on ProBoards allows you 500 characters. It's not enough to accept a complete song lyric but it's surprising how much information it can and will accept! My present signature now [February 2024] includes three visible hyperlinks as well as three invisible ones, embedded in the title (in bold) of the picture that gave me my avatar. I have a few characters left -- it would be fun to use them up, maybe with a brief quote or short hyperlink * (should one present itself), if necessary trimming down what's already there to accommodate it. I know... no life! Edit (four days later): Well it took a while but now I've used up all 500 characters. * Hyperlinks don't work with avatar texts

Down here in the lucky country, we all (all = those in Urbanised areas, the dudes in the "Outback" get shit sandwich satellite connections) have NBN (National Broad Band Network - the second B is silent I guess) ie, Federal Government supplied digital fibre to your front door, then you hook up from the front door to your router with a provider to enable voice and data services, the voice is essentially VOIP.

I still have a landline, which plays a pretty tune. But it's for incoming calls only! I also have a smart phone. I'm not a fan, but I must confess the family app and one or two others are very handy indeed. And you can best engage in long (or long-distance) telephone conversations via an app. This can save you a small fortune in phone costs. And of course there are the camera and video features. So yes, the thing has its advantages, but give me my trusty iMac any day for posting here and elsewhere.

You can embed the URL in your text, such as here, using this format (replace * with =): [url*https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Fantasia_and_Fugue_in_G_minor,_BWV_542]here[/url]
