For those who are interested, I'm in the process of publishing some of Jan Berry's original music scores from the 1960s. I'm transcribing them from the original documents used by the Wrecking Crew to record the original Jan & Dean songs.
I'll post information for each title as they become available.
The series began with publication of the transcription for "Dead Man's Curve."

Woah, 9 instruments in that studio score for Surf City? I knew the pianist wasn't accounted for on the AFM contract, but I didn't realize there were 2 unidentified percussionists as well. That explains the suspended cymbal that couldn't have been played live by either drummer! Always wondered about that.

Yeah, the cymbal rolls on "Surf City" were clearly separate, and possibly overdubbed. No record of the percussionist. The score included brass/woodwinds and rhythm section together. The studio version and live performance version were adapted from that main document. Common procedure for Jan. He did experiment with adding horns to the studio version, but he ended up cutting them.

Here's an audio preview . . . For anyone interested in Jan Berry's arrangements for brass and woodwinds: "Batman" (1966) — Alternate Brass and Woodwind Arrangement (intended for live performances) — (11 parts): Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax; Trumpet 1-3, French Horn, Trombone 1-3, Tuba. Note: The music notation software cannot realistically reproduce the glissandos and falls written in the original music score. Otherwise, the playback is remarkably authentic.

“Dead Man’s Curve” ( Audio Preview) — Jan Berry’s brass and woodwind arrangement for "Dead Man's Curve" (1964), from the full version intended for live performances in the '60s. The studio (hit single) version was culled from this arrangement, recorded with fewer players. The verses and outro are the same in both versions. Again, the music notation software cannot realistically reproduce the glissandos and slides written in the original music score. The recitation section accounts for the brief gap of silence.

The recitation section accounts for the brief gap of silence. "DMC" has one of the most exciting and ominous starts to any pop song. If anything spells disaster (on wax and regrettably in real life), it's that clash of minor-key riff and major-key chords. On the subject of regret, Mark, I'm afraid my allegiance lies with Brian's arrangements, as recreated by Joshilyn, and that's quite enough for me! But I do have the greatest admiration and respect for what you're doing. I'm sure your thread would get a lot more attention and many more responses if it were in the main BB section, maybe in a subsection of its own. It's just an idea.

Thanks jk. Responses aren't really necessary, especially on a BB board. I'm just posting these links for the few who may be interested. Next up is the Pop Symphony version of "Little Old Lady." It's all about getting Jan's original music scores on the public record, for posterity.

Since publication of Jan Berry’s original 1965 music score for “You Really Know How to Hurt a Guy” is forthcoming (Fiji Printing #13)— Pop Symphony version, with a few added elements from the hit single version—I thought I’d share some audio tracks featuring the sound font playback from the music notation application. I’ve isolated the different sections—Rhythm, Strings, Brass, and Woodwinds—so listeners can hear what each section sounds like when accompanied by the bass line. And then compare the sections to playback for the full ensemble. This approach is revelatory, allowing listeners to hear the nuances of this song on a deeper level. Then go back and listen to the original recordings (Hit Single version and Pop Symphony version) to gain a better appreciation of what’s happening instrumentally. You Really Know How to Hurt a Guy:Rhythm Section — sound font playback String Section with Bass Line — sound font playback Woodwind Section with Bass Line — sound font playback Brass Section with Bass Line — sound font playback Full Ensemble — sound font playback Transcribed from Jan Berry’s original music scores.
