Or in this case, not, because it’s a good forum! A real good forum!
Since threads have been going off the rails and others justifiably locked, we all need to calm down, take a breath and think about the mostly great posts and great few years we’ve had here. One might argue that even starting another thread touching on touchy topics is itself a really dumb idea.. maybe.. but hear me out. Apologies for the narcissistic approach but I’m doing so to illustrate a point. Pour yourself a stiff one or brew yourself a pot of tea Sauce because I’m naming names.
If you scroll down to the She and Him thread and glance through it you will see that I’m of fan of that duo, yet I am not impressed with this latest record covering Brian Wilson’s work. Seems to be a misstep to me. Dauber, on the other hand, also a fan, likes some of the tracks he’s heard and he either has or plans on buying the record. Andrew, has made it clear over the years that he doesn’t like Zooey’s voice and really hates this record from what he’s heard. A few days ago that thread got a bump back up from I think Rick and eventually the Till I Die Track was posted. Dirk, our host, liked the comment Sauce made panning it. Now you tell me, should I have suggested to Dirk and the boys that we lock that thread because it’s a lot of people carrying on about the fact that they don’t like it.? A little piece of me thought yes…it seems kind of mean to keep poking at a duo that I like. But that’s the price of free speech, or as Mick sang, you can’t always get what you want. It would be insane for me to start lashing out, trash talking, or demand a change of opinion from people here that I consider pals. That’s right, pals…. I think of this place as all of us being pen pals of old. Or maybe like in some corners of some forums, I should exercise my powers and cast the rest of you that don’t like She and Him into the cornfield.
I was listening to the Sail On podcast today for the first time in months and one of the few current episodes talked a bit about the sound issues with the new SOS Good Vibrations mix. This release is supposed to be a big deal, put together by professionals and there were and are noticeable flaws on Good Vibrations. I heard it with my own ears and it was discussed on THAT podcast not we folks here. Are people that notice these sound issues supposed to remain silent in fear of being cast into the cornfield?
I’m sure some people here think I should be sent into the cornfield. Paul JB, that guy who sometimes comes off like a snarky know it all. My response … hello… have you read posts by Andrew?! If I’m in the cornfield he sure as hell is going with me. What about Bob? No, not that “about Bob” our Bob, and his habit of starting threads that could easily fit into an existing thread. Speaking of “about Bob”….”Fille” and her “”” Out to the cornfield with both of them. Then there is DelistandSuppress… I basically considered this guy into the cornfield already a while back but in my view he’s turned things around and I no longer feel he deserves it out there.
Once upon a time, people were sent to the cornfield for talking with other so called pals about music created by people decades ago, that none of us really know. Sounds crazy but it’s true. Rod Serling could have created a whole other episode about it to piggy back onto ‘It’s A Good Day’. Some people seem to think that’s the way things should be. Some even seem to want to go into the cornfield by design. That’s cool, free will is a good thing, but so is freedom of speech. While I watched many of my pals exiled off into the cornfield by the spoiled child, I had no choice but to preemptively enter the cornfield on my own terms. But it wasn’t just any cornfield, it was a field of dreams. Of course, spoiled children don’t relent so easily and the new field was also destroyed. But Dirk heard a whisper “if you build It AGAIN they will come”. And here we are.
Calm down everyone. Lets not let others live rent free in our heads or on our field. Plenty of great people here and plenty of great and fun discussions. We love The Beach Boys and so do others on other fields. Anyone that wants to play nice on our field is always welcome. I say this with confidence as I’ve been reading Beach Boys forums for years and this is the best one by far. Keeping things open and free from fear of being wished into the cornfield comes with some hiccups.
