A Japanese created CD that was remastered and released in the US and Europe in slightly altered form. The Japanese version was part of the PET SOUNDS 2002 releases. There were some variations between the Japanese CD and the US one (which was mastered by Mark L.).

With the exception of Cal Feelin', which sounds like the air has been sucked out of what seems a spiritless performance anyhow, I really like this comp with its handful of left of field tracks.

This was an expensive “single,” because other than “California Feeling,” everything on it was already available on other CDs, sometimes many times over.
I’m inclined to invent a new term for these releases: Beach Boys Bloat.

They were putting out a large group of CDs in Japan at the time, to celebrate Brian coming over to perform PS Live. He had to cancel the original dates due to 9/11. They wanted to make it special. I remember scrambling to get the CD with California Feelin', then a few months later, bam, it was released in the states. Sheesh.
Here are the CDs released in Japan as part of this package.

Bob, are those in paper mini-sleeves?

Bob, are those in paper mini-sleeves? No, they are in regular CD cases with clear backs with more artwork.
And come on, how cute is the logo for this?
I will say that I have seen all of the CDs listed for sale throughout the years except I have never seen the American Spring one (this version).

It's a baffling compilation but a pleasant one nonetheless filled with lesser known gems instead of your usual predictable hits. Brian's version of "California Feelin'" is utterly forgettable though. In all honesty I never thought too much of this song and all the different recordings of it but this version is definitely the weakest.
