It was taken in the back yard of Brian's BelAir home. You will find a detailed explanation of the image in my book, Recording The Beach Boys, Part Two at 24 minutes, 10 seconds into the study-video. ~swd

Ah, coincidentally that same pic was used for a Dutch music magazine that published my article earlier this year on the (foggy) December 1970 concert in Amsterdam 🙂

I tried the picture in its original black and white version, and it just didn't 'pop'. I'm pretty sure everyone knows it was colorized. Les Hastings did it for us. I thought it looked better. Photo by Annie Leibovitz.

Is there any scope for easier UK or European distribution of the mag? I lust after several back issues, but US->UK (and vice versa) shipping at the moment is such an expensive mess.

Also getting rid of the busy background was a real improvement, although it eliminates my dog from the photo.
That day Diane Revell was visiting the house. Don't know if the photographer came with her, but Diane was running all over the house getting everyone motivated for a group shot. We left the studio for the backyard while Diane finally got Brian to come downstairs from his bedroom for this photo opportunity, since all six Beach Boys happened to be around the house. The shot was hastily taken in Brian's backyard with everyone sitting on a small three-step concrete stairway. I was standing behind the camera while several poses were captured. I guess this is the one everybody favored. More info on this photo provided in my book. ~swd

Thanks for posting that, Alan! Yeah, we were waiting on some ad copy, and then our printer had some technical difficulties. Hope to have the issues into the mail on Monday. As always, please allow 4-5 days for U.S. delivery, and 2-4 weeks for international delivery.
Thanks!
Lee

Yikes, my subscription lapsed around 1990. I’d have to sell my house to buy all the back issues I’ve missed.

Just arrived, read, it's great. If you've not subscribed yet, you really should.
Surprise #1: excellent piece on The Radiant Radish.
Surprise #2: Jack Riley's claim that he'd made a radio documentary called The Rise And Fall Of The Beach Boys that led to Brian contacting him. Now, maybe I've missed something over the last 46 years of researching the band, but this is the first I've ever heard of any such thing. Anyone ?

Thoroughly enjoying this issue; the archive quotes from Jack Reiley are packed with enlightenment (as long as he was embellishing things too much!).
Al’s memories are always entertaining too, and Mike and Bruce contribute some blinders.
The boxed set’s book should be terrific if that’s the kind of standard of recollection we can expect.
Have had to leave the issue at home for a few days though; looking forward to the Radiant Radish feature for dessert.
