So… just speculating… but maybe the announcement is that Nelson's back in the band! I hope so – he was a cool, good soul and a creative force. Will. Never. Happen. My post was in jest of course but Nelson’s missed. Very nice guy.

Oooooooh, I heard it through the grapevine! *Cough cough* Loose cannon. *Cough cough*.
But what a talented dude! Guy was all over the place on percussion! Animated to the extreme, and man, could he liven up a show or what?

Regarding the SMiLE cd rom idea.....Does anybody remember the Project SMiLE Cd Rom? It was so cool at the time. Yep! Came out in 2001. Over ten hours of music put together by fans. Probably the most complete mixes of all the songs recorded for Smile and comprehensive list of fragments up to that point. Fantastic! Do you also remember these Smile boots? endlessharmony.boards.net/thread/19/beach-boys-bootlegs-smile?page=1I'm pretty sure it also contained some choice musings by one Mr Cameron Mott.

Animated to the extreme, and man, could he liven up a show or what? My favorite visual memory from the big 2012 reunion tour (other than seeing all five surviving principals onstage, with some screen time for the two departed ones)? Nelson and John Cowsill bopping their heads in time to the music, their long hair swinging wildly, sometimes in tandem, sometimes oppositely, but always entertainingly!

When I think of Nelson Bragg, I think of the 2004-2005 Smile tours. The guy could really multitask back there!

Or maybe they found the GV multitrack... or the Oppenheim video reels.... Mikie I remember those SMiLE boots, the one that came out rather recently was the "2007 - Big Bag Of Vegetables (10-CD)", I found the tracklist of it but nothing more. It still remain a mysterious release...

I think the "Big Bag…" was a private collection circulated ampng only a few hardcore collectors – though I think all the material it contained is now "out there" (I might be wrong…)

Your idea brought me to this page - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_musical_works_released_in_a_stem_formatwhich has a cool list of songs/albums released in stem format. But as far as I know, no artist has released it for their entire catalgoue, have they? I'm not particularly knowedgable about the industry but i would have to imagine that would be pretty revolutionary. It could could also lead to an infinite number of songs with vocal samples, instrument samples, etc. Can't imagine seeing it in my lifetime but perhaps one day an artist will give it a try. Well, it'd sure be a lot of work for Mark! I think that artists (and maybe enlightened record labels) are starting to realise that there is some sort of value in releasing stems or discrete multis. The way I see it, it's a way to very publicly and transparently show people the craft that different artists have brought to record production. In the case of Beach Boys, it would be a way for them to say "look how good our stuff really is, even at the atomic level." But beyond that, there is also commercial value to it. I've thought for a while now that the only way to sell Pet Sounds again for the 60th would be to put out the discrete multis for that. I'm sure enough people would spend money on that to make it a hook to get people buying Pet Sounds material yet again. I think in the long term it would be incredibly lucrative for The Beach Boys. It could inspire a whole new generation of musicians to mine the material for samples. This could produce a whole new wave of music inspired by The Beach Boys. Their voices would be everywhere, and there would be a yet again renewed interest in the original work, leading to long term revenue streams for the band. While there are short-term benefits to slowly releasing material to hardcore fans, I think the potential revenue pales in comparison to the global and long-term impact of being the first band to release everything to everyone

I will say it again, everything that you scholars and historians and audiophiles have proposed register for me as exciting news or good news, but I would reserve the word big for something that actually intervenes into the historical legacy, and that could only be more new music or live performances, a reunion of sorts. If a boxed set, or a return of a former band member, or new technological advancement within the industry were to be the final reveal then I would never trust any planned 'big' news again.

Yeah why would the Beach Boys fanzine consider something small like a Beach Boys boxset big news? Crazy. Anything short of Mike, Brian, Al, Bruce and David moving into together for a hidden camera reality TV show and I'll never trust the word big again.

2017: 2CD set featuring Wild Honey for the first time in stereo with dozens of outtakes, and an additional digital copyright set released at the end of the year as well as a massive collection of live performances and rehearsals! 2018: The equivalent of 2CDs of Friends/2020 outtakes released digital only, with NO prior announcement or hint of release, in December... at least there was also concerts like the previous year. [RPO doesn't count because it sucks fight me] 2019: An EP. 3 tracks. Only 1 was worth listening to. Omnivore's Murry EP was a stronger release and he's been dead for 47 years. 2020 (so far): A random subpar performance from 1968 on Ed Sullivan. but yeah, y'all want a reunion and live album right?

Here is my take on it. If the post was made by the Beach Boys (or even a member), I would think that the news would be geared toward John Q. Public. In this case, the post was made by Endless Summer Quarterly Magazine, which is geared toward moderate to hardcore fans. To us, the box set would be BIG news. They know their audience.
Plus, "notable posters" have not shot down the idea that this was a tease for the box set.

Well let's all just wait and see and I'm sure whatever it is it will add to everyone's appreciation of the great beach boys and their music one way or another. If it's some new collection that we didn't know existed or if it is the release of something we know has been brewing or anything else we will all be very happy, and if of course it is something of the highest order of drama such as a reunion or final album or both then I'll be pleased as well, as will many. No further speculation nor critique of others thoughtful speculations from me

Howie Edelson just posted at that other place:
“I promise you -- you WILL NOT be disappointed. It exceeds every expectation.”
“Exceeds every expectation” - maybe eight discs and not the five that ESQ flagged? 😜

At the risk of setting my expectations too high I've decided to rest the bar at a steady "Brian Wilson coming to my house in a helicopter to deliver the 'Til I Die 16-track tape on a golden platter shaped like a surfboard"

I just want to add that this is a very well reasoned argument. Also I did not know that there was a Box set as something distinct from the recent fantastic archival releases we've been getting for wild honey, etc. So if there is a gigantic retrospective like made in California that has been in the works then please pardon me for not being aware of that because indeed that would be great , big news and would bring hours if not years of listening pleasure and new information. The question I'd like answered are the definitions of "VERY" and "Soon", as they don't seem quite aligned with my understanding/s.

So expect a new box set.

Oh I can't wait. Sunflower should be the most interesting box set to date, so many different songs came out of those sessions, very exciting times!!

Well done! Guess you’ve just broken news of one of the things that folk are hinting at, then denying they know anything about! That’s a cool story.

.. I just hope this is 'something else' on the release schedule and not the 'big news'. I really want that archival (8 disc?) release.
